What are peoples thoughts on checking in the dark? Do you consider it a usefull tactic or a marginal play? Is it considered poor etiquette at all?

Personally I see no merit in this play despite the fact that you are, in a way gaining position. I feel that it is a great way to get yourself in trouble in a hand, whether you have a monster or a draw. Plus if after checking in the dark you then proceed to reraise are you not totally giving away the strenght of your hand? I see this play being used more and more and am curious how people deal with it...
