    Ok,
I'm not at all worried but I thought I'd see what the story is with this.

I copied a selection in ms paint and pasted it as a "scrap" file, I wanted this scrap to be a bitmap image itself and it didn't have the bmp icon so I renamed it .bmp and then AVG popped up this message:

"Virus detected while opening file: filename.bmp.shs Warning: Hidden extension .shs"

    anything to worry about?

Also, how can I save scraps as proper bmps? :)

You just didn't save it correctly.
"Hidden" extension was a common technique used to infect users a few years back.

    Most likely a false positive.

open the scrap file and save as bitmap.

From the tools menu > folder options > view tab

Uncheck the box "hide file extensions"

now just rename the file to blah.bmp, removing the .shs extension.
