Part time job dilemma

    Hi,

I'm a student with a part time job that I started back in December/January - in the interview I was asked if I could definetly stay and work full time during the summer, from May to September. I was a bit desperate for the job at the time, so I said I could.

But now, I've got a bit of a dilemma: I've realised that sine I've only got one year left in college, after which I'll be stuck looking for some kind of "career", so I'll have practically no opportunity to go travelling. So I'm seriously thinking about quitting the job and going away for the summer.

The only thing that's really holding me back is a) the fact that I said I'd stay for the summer and b) the possibility of getting a bad reference from the company when I start looking for a job again in september.

I know nobody can help me with a), but if I was to give plenty of notice (say 4-5 weeks), do you think that it would affect any kind of reference I may try to get in the future? (I know it's down to the person giving the reference, but I'd just like to get an idea of what other people think) And also, any ideas on what kind of official reason I should give if I do decide to pack it in and hand in my notice?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Make up some story about something happening beyond your control that forces you to quit.

Or if you actually get along with your employers im sure they will understand.

The thing is I do actually like the job, and I get on well with the people I work with, that's why I'm a bit reluctant to leave and make them train somebody new in. I suppose it's really just up to me not being able to make decisions properly.

Why not go travelling after college?

    What do you study ?

If its a large company with a graduate program most of them let you defer for up too 1 year.

As far as the job goes, if they are really depending on you (The part-time student who promised to work full time 6 months later) to cover the summer time then the company probably isn't worth worrying about as its being run by a total gob sheen :)

They'll survive I'm sure. Just make sure to tell them early (But not too early incase they replace you then and there).
