Cheapest RAID5 controller is €120. Would you be better off buying a fourth 40 or 60GB SATA disk, installing the OS on that and running software RAID?

What OS do you intend on using?

If you are running the RAID 5 array for performance then do not go with the software RAID 5 built into motherboard SATA controllers as it is not very good.

If you want absolute performance then you would better off getting a dedicated card on a PCI-E x4 interface like this or this. If you go down that route and don’t see a motherboard you want with a PCI-E x4 slot just get an SLI motherboard and toggle the second slot to x8 mode and put it in that.

If it’s purely for storage/archival purposes then a PCI card/soft RAID setup should be okay.
