Thinking of doing some car maintenance this weekend. Maybe oil filter, plugs, maybe leads.

Thing is that i used to do some some work on my car in OZ but dont know any good places where i could go to buy the parts i need. Does anyone know of a good place to buy tools/ filters/ car parts in the northside. A place where they dont mind you asking some questions.

If i was to buy an oil filter in a mercedes service dealership would that cost be far more than one in a 'car parts place'.

    Thanks...

I've found blanchardstown motor factors pretty good in the past, they're down a little lane off the main street. I went into the place onthe top of blessington street one day recently, I was parked near and needed to get a set of plugs, a gallon of 10w40 and oil and air filters, all for a ford ka, so hardly special or unique in any way. He went to give me a gallon of 15w40, and told me he'd have to order everything else in, which I thought was bizarre. The parts should be common as muck, 10w40 is probably the most commonly used engine oil. Maybe he prefers to just deal with people in the trade or something and decided to treat me like a fool, I won't be going back. Got all the stuff, straight from stock, in C&F motor factors across from the coombe hospital, who I would highly recommend.

Don't forget the copper grease when you're doing the plugs, everything will seem like it went swimmingly until next time when you try to take the plugs out and find them siezed.

If you can bring yourself to make the arduous trek to Clondalkin, you could try German Swedish French car parts. I just bought 5 genuine in-box Renault oil filters for 4.50 plus VAT each. Special offer if you buy 5 but even if I bought one it would work out ~2 euros cheaper than the exact same item from a Renault dealer. And don't even mention the rip off that is Halfords.

There is also a place in Dublin called OTTO motor factors, I think they specialise in German cars only. Don't know anything else about them or where they are are located.

Both these places are decent and won't mind you asking questions and should have any necessary tools for routine servicing in stock. But just ring beforehand to make sure they all the bits you will need.

OTTO are located in Ranelagh and are very good for german parts eg merc vw etc.

    Eh, what?
I never put copper grease on my spark plugs. They shouldnt seize unless theres water getting down there.
I never even grease up my marine spark plugs
