PC Tower went POP

    I have a Dell Dimension 2.4GHz.

Last night I was relaxing watching a DVD on it when suddenly there was a loud pop/bang from the tower.

The DVD continued for a while but when I tried to shut down the DVD player so I could see what was going on everything crashed, so I cut the power.

I tried to start up the PC from stop (a bit indelicate now I think of it) but now all I am getting is black screen with white cursor flashing in top left corner. There does seem to be power in the tower and peripherals.

I haven't yet had a chance to open it up. Will do tonight.

Does anyone have an idea what might have blown?

A loud bang indicates something blew. It could be that this is preventing the PC to complete its boot up.

I presume that there was still an image on the monitor after the bang which would mean it prob wasn't the video card.

Best thing would be to remove all components and resit them and try again. If that doesn't work, remove different components and see if you cna locate the defective one. Maybe try starting with the DVD/CD drives.

Yeah the PC is a little over 3 years old so I think the warranty is gone (3 years?) but I will look into it!

First time this happend to me was when the wee red switch at the back of the computer was switched over to American voltage and blew the power supply. If yours still seems to be getting power it must be something else. Do what irlrobins said.

    Bizarre!

I was just at home and switched on the PC again and ejected the DVD and it was shattered into 3 pieces - it wouldn't eject last night. That was obviously the loud crack. Everything else looks ok.

I don't know how a DVD drive could have physically broken a DVD - heat from the laser? The drive seems to be still working fine too.

Anyway that's a hell of a relief. Thanks for the suggestions!

yea that can happen. Any weakness in the plastic makes itself known when it's rotating around at 10000 rpm... ;) Glad nothing serious.

    :p

I think you might find hard drives and disks do rotate at high rpm.

HD's are mostly around 7200 RPM although raptors go at 10K.

DVD drives are prob about 5-7K.
