I think that Kenpo club, they be there about 8pm some week nights, Graville road or something is the address.

If you go down to Synge Street CBS school, there is a good kickboxing club down there. I think tuesday and thrusdays. thats down Portobello way, off the south circular road.

there is loadsof Tai Chi around good old Rathmines too!

Checked out ur website and it says that the class is every two weeks ? Is it possible for me to train in UCD on Sat ??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,154 ✭✭✭Niall Keane

    Allright Si,

Yea, there's training this Saturday - 10am - 1pm, ask for "Practical Tai chi Chuan". We're usually in Hall C from 10-11, and in one of the other hals after that. Give me a call on 087-9421255 if you can't find us.

    Max,
No its not part of the Five Ancester Club.
The PTTCI club on Wednesdays is divided in half (area-wise) with Clare teaching her students and those interested purely forms, tui shou methods - reaction training drills, and tuishou freestyle - (chinese wrestling without a gi), and myself training my students / those interested in san shou/ san da. Paul Mitchell current IMAF Shuai-Jaoi World Champ also knocks down then to train with those interested in competing in Shuai Jaoi. (Chinese Jacket Wrestling)

    All the best lads,
    Niall

    Hi Niall,
So is it San Shou or Tai Chi Chuan- I take it there is a difference?

How similar are these styles to Kung Fu?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,154 ✭✭✭Niall Keane

    Red Raven,
Tai Chi Chuan = Kung Fu (internal and soft)
San Shou = Chinese Kickboxing, i.e. a Chinese style of mma competition -

Millionaire asked me on another thread, but I guess it’s as relevant to answer it here:

“Tell me what is "Practical Tai Chi"

I am guessing it is different from the more
popular Tai Chi versions we see.

How would be relate to fighting?”

Sorry for the delay in reply Gerry, anyway, the “practical” name was given to the style by Hong Kong journalists as Cheng Tin-Hung had successfully fought in, and trained others to successfully fight in Full-Contact Competitions. This made it different to the more common health styles. He had always just referred to the style as Wudang after the mountain where it is said to have originated.

It basically consists of 5 components:

    1. 24 neigung exercises – known as Tai Chi Nei Gung or 100 Day Gung: after 100 days a test is usually carried out on males where someone jumps off someone else’s shoulders or from something that height onto the abdomen of the tested 3 times, it differs from iron shirt in that the exterior muscle culture is left relaxed rather than tense in order to receive the impact, difficult to explain in writing.
    2. Tui Shou (push Hands): Sets of drills and a form of freestyle wrestling practiced to develop sensitivity and condition our responses.
    3. Hand Form: basically a catalogue of techniques and a way of ironing out weaknesses, such as gaps in the transition between or indeed in the techniques themselves. It develops balance and coordination but to a lesser extent than the Tui Shou. And of course it is a good way to wind down etc. a lot of fighters I know these days have taken up yoga, the form does the same thing only you’re also reinforcing the understanding and memory of techniques relevant to fighting.
    4. San shou, it literally translates as “scattering arms” hence the adoption of this term when the Chinese refer to Kickboxing. It goes beyond the sport, obviously enough, as for example the many throws that require the grasping and pulling of someone’s arm leg etc, or some of the finer locks that are hindered by 10 ounce gloves.
    5. Weapons – There are forms, tui shou and san shou drills etc for the weapons. The 3 weapons practiced are The Sabre, The Sword and The Spear.

All of these areas are designed to aid one another and deepen our understanding of martial art, I have found myself using techniques from weapon forms in san shou competition, minus the weapon obviously  and at times during weapon sparing have for example abandoned a spear and continued to fight using throws etc.
The old name for Tai Chi Chuan was Hua Chuan or transformation Boxing, and great emphasises is placed on the “soft” ability to follow and adapt, and on seeing strikes, wrestling, weapons as one and the same aiding one another rather than as separate boxes, ranges or mindsets, if you get what I’m trying to say? Basically it is the concept of folding.

Ah, there’s nothing quite like being vague, writing just isn’t the medium for explaining the martial arts, Hope this reply gives you some answers,

    All the best lads,

    Niall

    Hi Niall:

    Thanks for indepth reply,

Practical Tai Chi sounds very interesting. That "iron" training must be tough going...would not fancy someone jumping on me from a height!

    Cheers
