Why do people need to get their tonsils removed? What leads to it?

a lot of the time people dont realise they have needed them removed for some time.
most of the symptoms are sore throats , swollen glands.
they are located on the back of the throat and IIRC are important for antibodies production

As far as I recall, after having tonsillitis a few times, the tonsils get quite scarred, and the bacteria responsible can hide in/around the scar tissue or something, so people get recurring strep throat and tonsillitis. I was constantly ill for about 6 years, caught every bug going and had strep throat on average once a month..I got them removed when I was 12 and it was the best thing ever, I was much better after it.

The tonsils are lymphoid tissue that contain white blood cells to attack foreign particles. The tonsils get inflamed when white cells become trapped in their crypts.
Personally speaking, my tongue is not attached to my lower palate so I can move it back to my tonsils and....when I press hard....the trapped clumps of white cells are pushed out. lol, sorry, that's disgusting, but it means I've never had serious tonsilitis.

tonsils get swollen after recurrent tonsillitis, when they get very big, then it can affect swallow and even breathing - then it is a good idea to remove them. tonsillectomy although a routine procedure is not without serious but rare risks, so is not done lightly.

so this is how it went: Today is day # 9 after the procedure, and still not able to swallow fully! still hurts when im try to drink liquids so lets dont mention food! pain killers (Vicodin liquid) is ok...it takes my pain away., but puts me too sleepy afterwards! im F/32

I heard for someone my age, full recovery takes about a week and a half to two weeks. Its very annoying cus is summer, people invite you to BBQ"S and you are not able not even to flavor or savor your food! sometimes the sides of my tongue hurts too...I have checked it but nothing vissible appears. maybe some redness!

Tonsillectomy is a procedure you must do only and only i repeat...if you need it! in my case was frequent infections and a possible link to increased BUN AND CREAt. (kidney function markers).

I'm able to talk. but eating soft things is still a battle..every day...I hope by day #14 im fully recovered!
To those getting it done, be ready because you will encounter lots of pain, mostly of it discomfort...and be ready to lose at least 5 lbs..since your not able to eat or drink! but you must at least drink, since you dont want to end up in hospital with a diagnosis of Dehydration.
Good luck! i hope this info has helped!

Casita, why don't you pick just one thread to post your post-tonsillectomy diary in :P

Or you could start your own thread?

Keep us updated though. Hope you're able to go to BBQs before the weather changes ;)

    Hi,

I got my tonsils out a few weeks ago and now the tonsil bed is turning white. I'm using Corsodyl mouthwash and warm salt water. Does any know if the white coating on the tonsil bed is an infection?

    Thank you in advance!
