Graphics card (ATI X1900XT) question

    Hi,

First off, I've got two apologies to make. The first is because this is probably posted in the wrong forum, but I figured that because it has to do with physical graphics cards its better off here than in the Graphics forum. The second is because its probably a really stupid question.

I have a Shuttle SB81P Barebone S-775. If anyone is familiar with Shuttle cases in general and my model in particular, you'd know that they're very tidy compact little things with space at an absolute premium.

Currently, I have an ATI X700 Pro sitting very snuggly next to my sound card. By "snuggly" i mean they're right beside each other with hardly any space between them.

What I want to do is upgrade my graphics card to a sparkly new X1900 XT. My worry is that this card (or for that matter when I come to think about it, ANY new card) will actually be too big to fit in my PC.

Would anyone know what the chances are of a X1900 XT not fitting where a X700 Pro fits fine, and more importantly, if I buy a X1900 XT is "Sorry, it didn't fit in my PC!" a good enough reason to return it?

Well, the X1900 series are all double-wide cards, as in, they take up two expansion slots. If your current card and your sound card are in adjacent slots, you are pretty much screwed.
If not, you might still be in trouble, as the card is very long; much longer than most expansion cards - an SFF case may not be able to hold it.

It's not a legitimate reason to return the card, just because it "didn't fit".

As Malafus said the X1900XT uses a double slot cooler although your system does have a double expansion slot the heatsink protrudes into the system case with the way the graphics card plugs in so it is very unlikely to fit as the X1900 series heatsink assembely is quite large, the highest end GPU you can get with a single slot cooler I believe is the 7900GT (7900GT is the same performance as 7800GTX).

If you want [single slot cooler] ATI only try the X1800XL which is the only one I know of though a 7900GT is considerably faster.

Space wise as you can see in that link above a 6800GT will fit in the system so anything with a single slot cooler and roughly the same length will fit.
