I am embarking on a ‘road trip’ it involves travelling from L.A. to San Fran and from there to Las Vegas ( to play cards – a first - and celebrate a birthday that isn’t a 21st or thirty..) and back to LA, hopefull via the Grand that and back to L.A.

Books are great, but life lessons are better – advice would be welcome for any parts of the tour.

I did that exact trip myself in Nov/Dec. Stayed in LA for 4 days in Anaheim as it's beside Disneyland and close to San Diego. San Diego is about 90 mins- 2 hours drive from Anaheim, Orange County. Then from there we drove up the Pacific Coast Highway, stopped off in Malibu and then drove to Santa Barbara. Had some food there and drove a bit of Highway 66 which runs through Santa Barbara.
From there we hooked back up onto a main freeway to San Fran, stayed overnight in a freeway motel about 3 hours north of santa barbara. Then went direct into San Fran. Stayed 3 nights there. Headed to Vegas on the I5 and then turned off at Bakersfield for Vegas, brilliant trip- takes about 10-11 hours to get from San Fran to Vegas but it's nice scenary then desert.

Vegas is dirt cheap for accommadation. We stayed in the Stratosphere, on the end of the strip, tallest building in Vegas, rooms were $20 per room- so only cost $10 each per night! plus you have the rollercoasters on the top of the tower. The Grand Canyon is a 5 hour drive away so return trip is 10 hours!

LA is a 3 hour drive from Vegas, we stayed in Santa Monica for the last 3 days. Santa Monica is the best place in LA, right by the sea, plenty of shops, restaurants, bars plus think of all the hot babes on the beach!!

I stayed in the the USA hostel in San Fran. Probably not what you are looking for but free food free beer and a great atomsphere (hey, that rhymes)
Hotels in Vegas, Hit the hotels directly online, stay away from booking agents and you'll get a cheap room at a classy hotel
The most expensive I saw was the bellagio for $120 per night, if you do it right.
San Fran is amazing, its everything you've heard and then some. Quite possibly my favourite city in the US, apart from maybe New Orleans.
I travelled by greyhound, so be prepared on the road trip, water, lots of it, sunscreen in the car and watch out for them big bugs on the highways ;)
