Best Art For Me?

    Hi,
just had a read of the "what would you do if a group attacked you" I just hope I'd be able to out run them. If not however, I'd like to be able to defend myself.

I've never done any MA or SD classes before. I'm 6ft and currently weigh about 14 stone. I'm slightly overweight and judging by the amount of muscle I have, I should probably weight between 11.5 and 12 stone. So I need to lose about 2 1/2 stone. I'm not very flexible at all. I'd consider myself quite strong compared to the average person who's had as little training as me. I used to do weights/push up and all but I gave them up when I started carpentry as it tired me out big time. I've since given that up and I'm doing furniture design now. So no physical challenges in my daily life at all now. I'm going to start working out and excercising more, I'm determined to get to a proper weight and get more muscle on me but I'd also like to have some kind of skill at defending myself.

I love watching UFC and it gets me in the mood to train, but I have nothing to train at, hehe. I'm not the kind of person who would like to hit somebody, in fact, I wouldn't like it at all. I'd like to be able to defend myself by showing I could kick someones ass if need be, but that I'll give them a chance to back down first. I saw on discovery channel an art called ****to I think? It looked great, the master just threw everyone, everywhere, no matter how he was attacked, without any effort at all, he could just throw them about 2 metres away from him. Something like that would be brilliant to know:)

I don't think a weapon art would be much use as I'd never carry a weapon with me. I would of course love to be able to defend against knives/syringes etc if I was backed into a corner.

What classes would be best suited to me do you think?

    Any feedback appreciated:)

    Where do you live fella?

For throwing, try judo by the way. Most others don't do what they say on the tin whereas judo does.

Just saw this. That kind of defence would be really useful I'd imagine. Street defence. I'd just like to be prepared for them to throw the first punch, I don't want to start violence if it's not going to happen anyway, I'd always be happy to just walk away.

I'm in Bray, Co. Wicklow. Is Judo just throwing technique?

Probably one of the best arts for body mechanics/speed/Coordination, and just to toughen you up would be boxing. In a pretty short space of time you would be able to defend yourself. There is no time wasting.... I spent years learning stupid kicks that would never work on the street. Bar "Combatives" in my opinion, it's the best training one could have. You could go for kick boxing, but if you do make sure they hit properly. I've been to a few Kick boxing clubs in my time, and they were more like a traditional Martial Arts, and did not punch properly at all.

But have a look at a few different things if you want, keep an open mind.

    Just my opinion....

    G'luck, Baggio.

You should maybe try some sort of grappling art, BJJ would allow you to spar to your hearts content, be pushed to the limit and give you some good self defense that doesn't rely on punching and kicking.

As regards the throwing people 2 meters, think about that for a second. You said that you were fairly strong guy. How far do you think you could throw a large bag of coal? Most of that flying through the air is a very willing opponent basically throwing themselves around for the instructor.

hehe, I don't think I'd be able to throw anyone 2 metres unless I had great momentum (pick them up by the legs and with great difficulty start swinging them around like a hammer in the olympics and let go) but of course they'd have to be on the ground first, the guy I mentioned must have been a great master, and yes, his opponents were coming charging at him.

What art, if any, is in the above video I linked to? what does BJJ stand for?

BJJ - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as seen in the ufc.

But of course if you really want to be an all round fighter then you should try to find an MMA school and train all 3 ranges, Stand up, Clinch and Ground.

It all depends on what YOU want....

Hey Cormie. You could try this place http://www.masterstemple.com/
Ive heard good things about the chief instructor there.

Best of luck in your search.

    Dave

I trained at the masters temple for two years. Massan (the chief instructor) is very good and knows his stuff.

If you're looking for self-defence stuff, I would avoid the traditional karate and go with the Hapkido or kickboxing classes.

Keep in mind that its quite expensive to train there full-time. 50% of the reason I stopped training. (I wanted to take up MMA)

Well said mate.... avoid any “traditional” type Karate stuff, unless you want to go in for sports or competitions. Also, unless you want to start grabbing people, and going to the floor - I would avoid BJJ personally (although I'm sure a lot of people would disagree). Going to the ground is the last place you want to be, unless you have no other choice. But it's something that you must address in you training at some point or other, as you need to know what to do if such a scenario should arise. Kickboxing or boxing is the quickest way in and great for fitness. Some of the other arts take years to master.

    Just my take,

    Baggio.

    Thanks for all the feedback:)

I suppose MMA would be my choice, defence style like in the video I linked above. I'll look into it when I have disposable income, for now, that little clip will have to do:D

If you go the MMA route - make sure that they do some good RBSD as well. Check with the club before you join.

    Best of luck,

    Baggio.

Reality Based Self Defence (I think)

    Hi cormie,

The clip you liked is taken from "Bas Rutten's Lethal Street Fighting" DVD.
He is an MMA fighter but I have this DVD & what he teaches is a lot of Krav Maga techniques & principles which he even mentions on the DVD.

Krav Maga is a self defence system created for the Israeli Defence Forces.

Bas has been involved with Krav Maga for years training with one of the top Krav Maga inctructors in the world Amir Perets Bas even appears in his DVD's.

Poor auld Bas. He's really letting himself go. Listening to his comentary on GFC it because evident that he was becoming more of a comentatir and less of a fighter. For somre reason he has this almost traditional martial arts way of looking at stuff. You know, Brennan and Shaolin will be grappling and he'd be telling htem what to do. "All he needs to do now is pop up and roll..."

Of course I have mad respect for Bas because he is great, but more and more he's giving old school advice that just makes it seem like he no longer has his finger on the pulse.

    Peace
