Download a copy of fine pix viewer
    http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/technical/folder.pl?id=239

warning may not work with your camera/system but its fine with any camera I've plugged in to it.

i assume it takes some sort of memory card [SD?] usually when u connect the camera to your pc it recognises it as a storage device and it show up as a drive in my computer and u can copy/paste the photos, as opposed to using an program u got with cannon, you dont even need drivers.

    are u using a card?

Maybe I'm dumb. I presume CameraWindow is just a software prog to transfer the pix from camera to PC via USB. If is not being recognised then FinePix Viewer may work as an alternative.

this thread might be of help http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8365

A card reader should sort you out, about ~€20. Sounds like you might have dodgy USB cable or something. Did you try a different one? Is there any settings on the camera for usb settings, like DPOF and normal and so on?
