Good for the sport? Or just another journeymans promotion? There'll certainly be regular events but given that UFC are unlikely to play ball, is it one step closer to a unified governing body or just another division which could end up costing the sport dearly in terms of match-ups? We're already unlikely to see Fedor vs. Arlovski or Chuck vs. Wand, so is this just another obstacle?

Discuss, with reference to the course material.... (damn, sorry, been studying all weekend!)

Overall it sounds promising, you might have a point about it being bad for seperating top fighters from one another, but its gonna supply the much needed major competition for the ufc to take mma to another level....3 minute rounds is **** though, it aint boxing

ROT 4 is gonna be 3 x 5 min rounds oh yeah!

I think its sort of a flash in the pan and it will fall by the way side. In the mean time Illl support it 100% because it is competition against the UFC. I think they should just be sinking their money into getting Pride into Cali though.

    Peace

Cool, 5 minutes+ rounds are essential for mma, i suppose the reasoning behind behind 3 minute rounds is to favor the stand up fighter and make it entertaining for new people watching the sport....but that sucks they may aswell call it McMMA, if i wanna watch stand up ill go watch K-1

I don't know. I think the 3minute round thing is probably to make the action faster as opposed to standing. Also if these guys are team based they're going to want to reduce the risk of damage so they can be ready for the next league fight.

It may turn out to be a good idea yet, dunno - although if Bas & Militech have had anything to do with the decision making then im sure the well being of the sport was put first.

It sounds promising. I'm not fond of the team names though. Too cartoony. Hopefully it will change after the first season.

are they not 4 min rounds?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

yes, IFL is four minute ounds, times 3. Damo mentioned 3 min rounds so I told him about ROT being three 5 min rounds. THen a conversation about round times started up.

    Peace

I think each round in an MMA fight should be at least 5mins. That can even be too short sometimes. Pride have the right idea with the opening round 10mins. It makes it so much better to watch.

I'm a bit suspicious of this IFL thing with it's teams but I guess we'll just have to wait to see what happens.

The team structure is very restrictive,

If a fighter is injured, does he get dropped from the team?

Any competition with the ufc is good

This is also the reason why they have no elbows, less cuts so the guys can fight more often.

All in all, i think it is a good idea, but put simply MMA is not a Team Sport. It's really that simple.

Maybe it will give a good proving ground for some newer guys to get more fights under there belts and get used to the "big time" i suppose.

All in all, i hope it stays going and turns into a monster.

Exactly, MMA just isn't and shouldn't be a team sport. You have no one to blame but yourself if you lose a fight. But now it's beyond that, it is a team effort and they can all blame eachother for losing out to the other team etc...
It's unfortunate that the only competition to the UFC is this thing.

The more I think about it, the less I like it.
