I have heard of a program that can get music back off your ipod, so if your friend came over with his ipod you could copy all of his stuff onto your computer?

Anyone know what this program is called?

Hey I didn't think it to be necessary to open a new thread for this. I have an iPod Video and want to upload pictures to it. Does anybody know how? I tried transferring directly but it won't take it.

Isn't it in the menus in itunes? (sorry, I dont have it installed at the moment)

Yes it is under 'Edit' -> 'Preferances' but I hate the way it tries to synchronise the iPod with the PC hard-disk. I just want to copy the damn pictures my own way.

Ehh... I do not have an ipod but I have an mp3 player

Can you not just look at the ipod as if it were a removable drive... like a usb drive or something??

If so... you do not need a program to do it. Just plug in your friend's ipod and then select all the songs you want off the ipod (using CTRL) and then right-click and press copy. Then go to your My Music folder (or whatever folder you want to put the songs into) and right click and press Paste.

You need to look into IPODs a bit more timbuk2.. they have ZERO FLEXIBILITY unlike other MP3 players :(

as ciaran said, but to clarify a bit more....
ipods don't store the mp3's in any sort of sensible form for human viewing, they have a directory structure that you need to use the database on the ipod to navigate easily.... something like ephpod will copy music off one handy enough...

You can actually just use the iPod as portable hard-disk. If you put files on it yourself the iPod interface would not pick them up however.

And this is legal now is it?

Besides you can do it without any software

Browse to the IPOD drive via My Computer
    Click View
    File Types
    Show Hidden Files

The filenames are all hexed up but the ID tags remain the same.

Yeah, this one's a bit shady. Leave out the "if I want to do something illegal" bit please lads. :)

Ah, that's a bit of a pain really. I would prefer it the other way, like normal MP3 players.

Ephpod is a handy auld one.

Install it, plug in your iPod, select the files to copy and click copy...

    Easy peasy

It isn't all that hard though really. It has a directory structure alright but its obvious enough which files are your songs and a tagging program can restore proper file names and such. Its just a bit more awkward than using mp3s with more transparent removable drive type players.
