...need to get to Belgrade at some stage in the next few months. Just need to be there for a day or so.

Also believe Simple Minds are playing Zagreb, Sarajevo and Skopje, so would like to tie that up. Can one fly into Belgrade and go on to those cities and back for the return flight pretty easily? Are there rail links between Belgarde and those cities?

I have a European Rail guide at home so will check tonight - in the meantime you can try the international section of www.bahn.de I don't think there's a rail connection between Belgrade and Sarajevo, but there's definitely a regular bus. I suspect that the main train lines to Athens from Germany etc will pass through Belgrade and Skopje. Pretty sure there's Zagreb - Belgrade connections.
edit: yip, 5 trains daily direct between Zagreb and Beograd. 6.5 hours. 5 also between Beograd and Skopje; 3 direct - 8.5 hrs. Was wrong about Sarajevo - there's one train from Beograd daily, but it's 14 hrs, with a four hour wait at the border.

Looked into this a bit more. There also two trains a day from Zagreb to Sarajevo and v.v.; one is direct, although it takes longer than the other, which has a train change at the border! Skopje to Sarajevo is a non-starter, unless you want to spend 30 hrs on the train, with several changes (via Beograd).
    So, in summary:
Beograd - Zagreb and Skopje: easy
    Beograd - Sarajevo: bit awkward
    Zagreb - Sarajevo: easy enough
    Zagreb - Skopje: via Beograd
    Sarajevo - Skopje: forget it

PM if you want more details - times and train numbers etc. Or look at the www.bahn.de site - really helpful

Beograd - Zagreb and Skopje: easy

    Looks the most likely.

    Thanks again.
