Forgotten Childhood

My memeory of childhood is really bad. I have heard that this can mean that you had a happy childhood. However everything before the age 10, I could count the number of memories on one hand. The thing is I have a very good memory.

Also I have heard a possibility that there was a traumatic incident which may have caused this blackout. Is this a possibility?

ANYWAY, An old girlfriend once told me she went to a Psychic who told her all this stuff about what happened to me. Fairly nasty stuff but all of which I had no recollection. I contacted her again last year and she denied that this conversation took place. (I was like, WTF)

Before anyone says I have been to GP. I have been refered to a counsellor. I am on waiting list to see the next one. another 3/4 weeks. So I am trying to confront this problem

So I am just wondering if anyone went through similar situations, poor memory, cousellors etc.?

Asides from memory loss and possible reasons, do you have any feelings of having a had a good or bad childhood? My childhood was totally mega but I only really remember a handful of specific moments that took place before before the age of 10.

If you did have an unhappy or traumatic childhood it may be a blessing that you have no memory of it. Do you have any reasons why you want to want find out e.g. does it affect your day-to-day life?

Yes, i am suffering from this for the past 4 years. I am now 23 and 4 years ago my brother became very very ill. I know this sounds weird but i do remember alot of my teenage years which is fine but from age 1 - 14 i dont remember a thing. Its all very hazzy. This may all be to do with the effect of my brothers illness had on the family, its something that i have not thought much about. I tend to bottle things up and deal with them in my own way. I have never seeked help for this and i really dont want to, to be honest.

But whatever you do mate, good luck with it.

It is never too late to have a happy childhood.

It is good that you have been referred on to a counsellor many of us have baggage from our families that we need to sort out.

The bit about it never being too late is that we can all learn to love our innerchild and learn to laugh and have fun, stuff most people learn as they grow up but it is never too late to learn to do this.

I would seriously not pay any heed to what someone said to your gf tbh.

This is your life and your process and I wish you well.

Well, I suppose It does affect to some extent. I just feel its about finding out what or who I really am. I also think that these things will eventually come back to me so I may as well face my demons now. (That of course if there are demons there!!)

I can't remember my childhood either but im pretty certain this has nothing to do with repressing a trauma

I was having this conversation with some people last Saturday night. One felllow reckoned he could remember lots of things from when he was 3. I think my first memory was Packie Bonner saving that penalty again Romania in the World Cup in 1990 when I was 9 and the dog jumped up with all the screaming and shouting!

Seriously... I remember a few things from earlier than that... but it is very hazy to be honest. Not a big deal... most kids have pretty sheltered lives... I mean.. what are you going to do as a kid apart from hear arguments and play with toys, etc.

it's normal to not have many memories. Most people can't remember anything at all before the age of about 5 (usually) and they only remember bits and pieces of the next few years.

Sure, I can't remember what happened yesterday, or a year ago specifically, but I'm sure i'm not repressing anything!

the most important thing is that the good memories out weigh the bad ones
