Disillusioned with Commuting / Transport

Well I have to say I have become rather disillusioned with the state of the Commuting / Transport section boards.ie

It has become nothing more than a branch of P11ism and the continuous daily trolling of Transport21fan has really turned me off, BIG TIME. I thought boards had something going for it, seems I was wrong.

I for one won't be coming back until it improves!

    Disillusioned.

I agree in a sense - there is so much lobbying going on here that it's hard to have a structured conversation between the "HERE'S WHY WE'RE RIGHT!".

You have made the grand total of 7 posts on the whole of boards and you're disillusioned? Why don't you try to contribute and debate whith those you disagree with rather than posting about how fed up you are?

Why don't you start some threads that interest you and we can discuss them? I'm an ordinary P11 member but don't always agree with what other P11 members say, so it's not like some sort of totalitarianism.

Just my $0.02 and not a dig at you.

Yes I am rather new to boards and transport is one of my favorite topics. However the reason I haven't posted much, is down to pie in the sky thinking of transport21fan. That is what has really pissed me off.

With respect, you can add him to your ignore list and his posts won't show so you won't have to be annoyed by him.

Personally I find that doing this leaves odd gaps in the thread of a conversation as people take him/her (do we know) to task. I can't ignore the lot of you. So instead, I don't spend as much time in here as I used to.

I sort of commiserate with the OP for the simple reason that while I feel a lot of the P11 people here make a reasonable amount of sense, I have some trouble with some other users whom I wouldn't note for their balanced views, as in Everything CIE does is bad, everything the RPA does is good.

    Life isn't that simple.

Glad to see boards.ie improved so quickly in response to your request.

For my own part, I’ve nearly a thousand posts behind me and in my time on boards I’ve come across people with views that I strongly disagree with. But it never made me doubt the usefulness of boards. If you have a problem with one poster, then to be honest I would not be shooting the medium.

I’ve made my own decision that when I reach the magic thousand posts I’m going to stop posting. But that’s not because of any disillusion. I’ve found the experience useful, and mostly through the experience of having to justify opinions to people I disagree with. You’ve eight (8) posts behind you. Come back after 100 and maybe, just maybe, the ‘boards has gone to the dogs’ line will look more credible. Right now it just looks silly.

As to T21, his posts can be blunt and challenging, and he rarely uses diplomatic language. But at the end of the day the essential view he’s expressing is irrefutable. Take this recent post from the thread below http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054903831
... West of the Shannon in the next few years the countyside will be over populated and the towns underpopulated and it'll be utterly impossible to make public transport of any kind work. God help us if there is a fuel crisis in Ireland and these people who drive up to 40 miles a day to work can't get around. They would be still 20 or so miles from the nearest bus or train services......
That simply expresses the plain fact of the matter, and I cannot see why anyone would describe this as ‘pie-in-the-sky’. ‘Pie-in-the-sky’ is a charge more appropriately levelled at, for the sake of argument, the ‘build it even if they never come’ attitude of West-on-Track.

I have never said anything such thing. They are both far from perfect, but the RPA offer more hope - that's all. It's a bit like being asked if you want your **** sandwich with butter or margerine when being asked to chose between the RPA and CIE.

That's my personal opinion you do not have to agree with me. I am not going to be drawn into a slagging match with P11 members cos I do not have a problem with P11, what it stands for or what they are trying to do. Sometimes they come across as being too protective as IE management while tearing into the RPA. That's their business and good luck to them. It's not for me, but so what.

I think CIE have been a disaster for public transport development in Ireland and the CIE Unions are holding it back. If I repreat myself over and over again I'm sorry. It's no different that what other people post about the RPA, the NRA, WoT and so on.

and there is no laws against talking through me hole either if I do it. Which unlike some of the asperger's syndrome cases on this forum I freely admit to doing now and again.

What would you have been expecting? P11 is big into represeting (public transport) commuters so it should be expected they would have some individual members posting here.

There are plently of non-P11ish thread here about cars and roads and stuff. If that's your game, there is also a Motors forum in addition to numerous threads about roads etc here.

I don't want to sound offensive but if you've only been here a short time, made very few posts on boards.ie in total, and never started threads about things relevant to you, you sound a little pathetic just bashing the forum and T21fan.

Make it improve, if you disagree with Transport21fan then tell him and fight your corner

I have no problem with Transport 21 expressing his opinion. There is no harm in being challenged, agreeing with him or disagreeing.

That's the point. Mr T21 does seem to be a bit of a fire-starter but the ensueing arguement can be interesting.

Do take the point about CIÉ bashing - that does go on a bit, but hey give me Navan, answer my questions about Braostone Vs Spencer Dock, convince me that the Interconnector is really coming and I would say that in general, give or take some arguing this section is interesting and a good source of info (CIÉ bashing aside)

Long after we've moved on there'll be a CIÉ of some sorts - discussing and challenging their culture and modus operandi is not a bad thing.

I think the Crazy Horse's post is a thinly-veiled attempt to impose censorship on this forum. What did you think the forum "had going for it?"

I've got news. This is a discussion forum, opinons are its lifeblood. It would be very boring if transport in Ireland was super-efficient and we all sat around agreeing with each other. Is that what you'd prefer? Hardly.

If you want to read eulogies to CIE and a cosy consensus about the solutions to Dublin's public transport deficit, try another internet forum.

If you can't stand the heat there's a solution - vacate the kitchen. This is the transport forum for Ireland, it's always got interesting threads and opinions, and it's great to see Platform 11 members past and present contributing their posts - and I say that as someone who disagrees with most of Platform 11's ideology ;)

ive no problems with this forum either. I have certainly learnt a lot since first posting, about a whole range of topics ,and this forum has helped me to better form my opinion on some matters (such as west on track.....i would have initially been in the "open it at all costs" camp until reading the opinions and statistics on here and I am now firmly in the other camp...) ive had spats with a few members admittedly, but thats Ok..thats freedom of speech....

not keen on the guy who emailed me and threatened to report my signature to the Mods though...... :-(

I have received the sum total of one complaint, none from you.

Yes, there is a lot about railways at the moment, but we are in the middle of spending €34bn. I for one would like to see it spent properly.

I've already put out the marker that, spats not relating to boards.ie are to be kept elsewhere. This happened to be brought on by a P11 / ex-P11 spat.

Its not about complaining Victor, its not about censorship or banning anyone for me. This forum is just less enjoyable with continual ranting.

Though I dont post often, I've always enjoyed reading everyones opinions, 'cept now it seems to be rant after rant after rant.

I was in an accident 5.5 years ago. I am still recovering. Statisticly, I am a "minor injury" case.

Some of us have something to rant about.

Sorry to hear of your accident.

Personally I would'nt call you a ranter Victor. I wasnt pointing the finger at you, just quoting and replying to your post.
