Cost of dropping Car Tax/VRT?

    Hey guys,

I've always wondered why the Govt never just dropped Road Tax altogether and added the necessary increase onto petrol to fund the shortfall.
I think it'd be much fairer as the user pays and also foreign drivers when in this country would be contributing to the roads.

Also, you could extend this to VRT aswell. If VRT and Road Tax were history then surely it would be fairer on the little old lady who just could buy a cheap little Micra and go a couple miles down town every week without having much of a fixed cost(except for depreciation) for having the car. It would be the business driver clocking up 50k a year that would pay proportionately for the more they drive.

Any thoughts or ideas how much a litre of fuel would be if Road Tax and VRT were abolished and the shortfall added to the pump price?

    Tom

    Fantastic idea, but ultimately flawed.
Because our government is solely interested in the welfare of its citizens they deem in the best interest of everyone to tax everyone the same ( thanks Bertie the " SOCIALIST " ) Sarky Sarky Sarky.
Anyone with a bit of cop would realise that if it wasnt for the tax we pay to prop up civil servants pension / junkets.Hmm I must say to my boss that I need to go to Hong Kong to see how my calculator is made !!
There is alot of merit to your views, but incase you didnt know our scocialist g
overnment will bend us over at any given oppertunity and like good little citizens we take it, without a whimper !!

Find out how much the gov picks up in VRT and road tax and divide that amount by the number of litres of fuel that are sold.

The VRT and road tax should be simple enough to get not sure about the petrol though. I suspect it would be a noticeable jump in price.

I like the idea of it but there would be problem. The amount of petrol sold here would drop dramatically. I would start visiting relatives and friend in the north much more often.

This would probably mean that project fuel revenue would be much higher than the actual revenue generated unless the gov has an accurate method of forcasting the amount of people that will cross the border.
