hand advice...

10 euro live freeze out... 5 handed at my table....

average stack about 4k, i've 10k (which is nice!). blinds 200/400
early position calls, i limp with A9 suited from small blind and BB checks. flop comes A88... i'm first to act and i push all in... remaining two players fold quickly, i take down 1200.

i didn't think much about this hand at the time but my mate gave me a grilling over it later on, and to be fair what he was aying made alot of sense... he was saying why effectively risk 4k to win 1200. and you're only getting called if your behind, so why not slowplay it and build value. my thinking was the guy who called 400 has picture cards at best, he's not in there unless he has a low pair, or face cards, maybe ace rag... i'm happy with my nine kicker cos the lads at the table would DEFINATELY have raised with AT AJ AQ or AK. so i havent put him on an 8. as for the BB as soon as the flop hit he lost all interest, and he didnt seeminterested to start with so i figure im ahead and winning this hand, the reason for my all in was for it to look like a steal cos i had been stealing alot and would have taken a caller, confident that i was ahead... i see my mates point about only getting called if im behind but i think i played it fine... any comments?

Well, you don't risk much by giving a free card, unless the limper hits a small full house. But you're not normally getting any more money from a worse hand anyway. If you really thought the limper might call an all in with 66, but he wouldn't call a normal sized bet, then what you did is fine.

I think you should be less confident in your reads though. Surely sometimes the limper could have AJ or 78 here? And this

sounds like he has a house of aces.

i'd be more cautious against in the fitz or somewhere but this was just a college game, and sneaky plays like that are so very rare. :p
