From what I've been reading here, you shouldn't be eating carbs after 7pm. Ideally eating protein.

So what do you snack on at this time? I've been trying nuts recently but am open for suggestions :)

Evening time is meat & veggies time. Cottage cheese is good in the early evenings, nuts are good too but not too many too near bed-time (calorie wise they actually pack a punch due to their fat content), as in a handful is fine. Green tea is always a pretty good option if you're trying to cut down your calorie intake.

Don't fruit and veg mostly contain carbs?

I thought the idea was not to eat carbs in the evening time. Something to do with them not getting used up before sleep and then becoming fat.

Yeah, but I said veg (as opposed to fruit & veg). Vegetables in general have very low caloric density of any kind (carb/protein/fat) and can be pretty much eaten whenever you want. Broccoli, for example, I think has somthing like 2g protein & 3g carbs per 100g broccoli. That's not much over 20kcal for the whole lot, and 100g of broccoli is a very respectable serving. I don't think anyone is fat because they ate too many vegetables. I call them 'free' food.

BTW, although I would encourage eating several fruit portions a day, they are not typically in the same boat as vegetables and you shouldn't just consider them as 'free' food.

Absolute bollox, the only starchy carbs i will eat all day are well after 7pm and i am consistently losing Bodyfat ( Paleo anyone? )

When do you workout? that is really the most important question with regards to when you eat strachy carbs.

I workout in the afternoons. Usually before 5pm. And trust me to pick up things wrong :(

For the majority of people (i.e. not all), eating starchy carbs after 6-ish i generally not a great idea. Most people are quite sedentary in the evenings and so a high intake of carbs past dinner time just isn't needed. The OP has said he trains in the afternoons, so a dinner around 6 or 7 (about an hour or an hour and a half after a workout is ideal) with a nice mix of carbs and protein is fine. Depending on what time you go to bed at there's usually enough room later in the evening for a protein based snack like cottage cheese, a whey shake or some lean meat. I train in the mornings and am usually in bed before 11, so there's no point at all in me eating starchy carbs after 6pm- my body doesn't need them and I feel bloated and uncomfortable. I get all my starch in at breakfast and lunch when they're needed.

Which is exactly why i said that the most important question with regard to starchy carb intake is when do you train.:D

aboslutely, and I agree, but you know how statements can be taken out of context... I just wanted to totally clear it up so that it can't be misunderstood ;)

I usually eat a few slices of plain chicken before bed as a snack - I was under the illusion this is the best sort of thing to eat alongside fruit and veg before going to sleep? It seems to crop up quite alot as such but I'm half expecting dragan to turn around and say - Nooooooooooooooooo!

ah don't mind him, he has permanent PMS :p

Plain chicken is grand, but don't eat fruit with it, high in sugars. Stick to the veg, and keep the portion small

Whoops, yeah I gotta agree here, obviously a good workout is a ticket to have a nice carbfest, I was really speaking in terms of a rest day or non-training person.

What's with the chicken slices too - I mean I hate to get on people's cases about everything but are they the prepacked slices? Those things have way too many ingredients given that they should be just chicken + they're expensive, and you have to eat the whole pack or three to get any protein out of them.
