Odd problem with drives...

Right, moved house recently - prior to the move, last time computer was switched on it was fine. Carried the computer into the car, carried it out of car, not so much as a bump during the entire process.

Boot up the computer at destination b and optical drives no longer being recognised! I disabled all drives apart from the hd in the setup screen, then enabled them all again- still nothing. Everything is plugged in and connected correctly. Computer just refuses to recognise either drive - one dvd-rw and one dvd-rom.

    Any suggestions?

check all ide connections in right,,check all jumper connectors are on right, pins, check all ide cables are in all the way, seated in motherbord connectors and drive interfaces .or disconnect all drives apart from hd c:\ ,add drives 1 by 1 ,and see if they work, set bios setting ,to autodetect all .ide and cdrom drives, advanced settings.check all bios settings ,to do with devices, boot settings etc.

Have done all that already, no joy. Extremely annoying seeing as nothing was changed whatsoever since it was last turned off...I'd be wary if one of the two drives didn't work but the fact that both optical drives are not working leaves me a bit confused..

Interesting….Can you name the pc in question,

Also open up the back or top of your pc, check that the HD is securely connected to the wire. Failing that…
XP Only> when rebooting >tap F8, this should bring you into the Windows Advanced Options Menu, once this comes up select the Last known good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) …

    hope this help's...

    /me bets it's a dell

I saw this exact problem before. Can't remember how I fixed it. If I'm right, I'll spend some more time trying to remember.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll have a proper crack at it tonight.
