Is Good Friday a National Holiday?

Can someone clear this up for me!

We have GF off in work here which we think is not officially a national holiday. Some friends are saying that it is. All I know is that it is not in red on my calender! AFAIK its a holiday in UK though. So can anybody clarify?

Also, (if applicable!) who here does get GF off, or a half day or whatever?

    Employer's discretion.

Not officially no, but some employers will give a day or even half a day off.

Its a bank holiday not a public holiday. With the exception of my current job i've always had to work a normal full day on good friday.

    it is neither.
it's is entirely up to your employer whither you get it off or not.

Would have to go with BC on this one - it is a Bank Holiday but is not a Public Holiday. Normally there is not much difference and people refer to what are deemed by government as Public Holidays, as Bank Holidays.

Either way it is up to the employer and thankfully mine gives us the day off.

As stated above it's an offical Bank Holiday but not a Public Holiday. I've always had to work it.

I've never had to work on Good Friday thank God but it definitely up to the discretion of your employer.

Correct. The main difference between "Bank Holiday" and "Public Holiday" is that your employer can (and usually will) take a day from your annual leave allowance if the business is closed on a Bank Holiday. As you point out above though, people often interchange Bank Holiday and Public Holiday, leading to confusion just like this.

My job works to the UK calender so I get it as Public holiday. Happy days!
