    Hi'
has anyone any suggestions about my monitor. I boot up and everything goes fine, green light on monitor but black screen. I checked all cables, connected fine, how can i control shut down without seeing anything on screen, just wondering is there something wrong with video card? or something. Its 17in monitor, Ihooked up a 15in one to see was that working but also black screen.

Well, the first question I would be asking myself is "Is the computer actually booting?" Do you get the normal activity that you would associate with a normal boot? A beep, disk activity, Windows start-up music? Can you ping it from another machine on your network (if you've got a network , that is)?

If it is booting then, yes, It's likely to be the video card. Is it a card or on-board video? If it's a card, try re-seating it first. If that doesn't work, have you got a spare one you could swap in? If not, you can pick up one fairly cheaply.

It would be a good idea to use a monitor that you've verified is actually working. I know you've swapped in another one but you haven' t said if you took it from a working setup. If it is from a working setup then great. If not, it's unlikely that the two monitors you've got are both broken but it's good debugging practice to be sure.

    Regards,

    Liam

Yes, liamo it is booting with normal activity and the other monitor i used is from a working setup. I think its on board video (explain more) One minute it was working next its not, so she told me, its the wife machine. Is it fixable liamo.

Onboard graphics is basically a chip on the motherboard that acts as a (pretty basic) graphics card.

From your descriptions, I'd say that's the problem. See if you can get your hands on a cheap (or borrow one off someone) graphics card, and test it then.

if u are sure that the pc is booting, then it could be out of range res or refresh rate for the monitor, but somthing similar happens to me if i leave a virtual drive on with an image mounted, just get a black screen.

    Something similar happened me...

When I bought my new screen (this was about 5 months after I bought the computer, so I had another screen before it), I had the setting set for that screen... suitable res and refresh rate. As the screen was black and I didn't know my way around windows enough to do it on the blind I had to turn off the computer, change the screen to an old one, turn it on, and change all the settings to suit the new screen, then turn the computer off again, and put on the new screen again

    And wolla :) It worked

PS the screen that was blank at first was a LCD screen also

Before, I said I tried an other monitor but did'nt work, but this time I got it to work, last nite. Its a 15in monitor the other was 17in . Made sure everything was connected and booted and wala working again. But am interested to hear about EL WOG monitor problem. There were no signs of it going caput before so just wondering, Res seems interesting.
