Womens mini marathon training schedule

This schedule is on the Mini Marathon site, but I don't know what it means. Can someone tell me what they are saying.
The way I see it I do Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 and then repeat. Is that right? So you jog for 5 mins on day 1 and 2, then 10 mins on day 3 and back to 5 mins on day 4??

    Schedule 2 (Runners - Beginners)
    Day 1: Walk 10 mins., stretch 5 mins., (warm-up); Jog 5 mins., walk 20 mins. (warm-down).

Day 2: Alternative day's exercise, i.e. aerobics, cycling, swimming, team games etc.,
    Or as Day 1.

    Day 3: Walk 10 mins; Stretch 5 mins., (warm-up); Jog 10 mins., walk 5 mins. (warm-down).

    Thank you

Seems awfully light for a training schedule - whats the distance for the run? The way you have interpreted it is correct, however. It gives you leeway to choose which days in the week you want to train. Have you jogged before?

it seems to be a 3 day week schedule and I guess they update the website every week? there is a second week up there now with a little extra work added..

its a 10k marathon. I'm still confused. do you mean I only train 3 days a week, as in every other day? it seems a lot to train every day without a break.

I am reasonably fit, used to do kickboxing a lot and did the mini marathon 2 years ago but didnt run the whole way. I did it with a friend who had asthma so i kept with her pace although it wasn't challenging enough for me.
This year I am doing it on my own so i want to train properly. I havent done much exercise lately and have been run-down so want to start slowly. having said that can anyone recommend a better training schedule than the one on the flora mini marathon site.

    thank you

The training schedule on the website is designed for beginners. It a 3 day training week so you would train one day and rest the next. As the site is updated every week it will be progressed to include more training as you get fitter and closer to the event.

If you haven't done much exercise recently and have been feeling rundown then you should start off very easy. Have you started training yet? how much did you run and how did you feel after training? How good (or bad) you feel after a run will give a better indication of whether you are doing too much or too little.

    Good luck with the mini

In January I started training with the hope of running 10k Bupa run in April. I had never run before and was quite unfit. I started out with a 5k programme and then moved onto the 10k one because I had the time. Not sure if you have enough weeks to do both programmes but links below are what I used.

I found the best thing about it was the structured approach, I knew I had to go on Tuesdays, Thurs and Saturdays at the start, rather than it just being a case of coming home from work and thinking "Will I go tonight or not" because going on past experience I would have ended up never going out then.

They worked very well for me - I couldn't even run the 1.5 miles the first night and now I'm up to 4 miles (and hoping for 4.5 today)!

after a few years of empty promises i've decided to do the womens mini-marathon in June. I'm not unfit but not particularly fit either so Im going to use the training schedule on their site.

Here's hoping I finally make it this year

Hi, I started training this week and did the "reasonably fit" program which is 5 mins walking, 15 mins running and 5 mins walking and felt brilliant afterwards. I was just so happy to be able to last that long after a period of relative inactivity. I did another session today and felt good although i got a bit of an ache down the side of my lower leg - I was out last night and spent most of the night dancing so hopefullly that was the reason.
Thanks for the well wishes :)

You should try and get someone to train with; that way you will stick it out.
If not, once you start the training, hopefully the feeling you get from it will have you looking forward to the next session. I know that is the case with me - that runners high feeling is brilliant!

    Good luck with it

Dont worry I know it's not a marathon. In fact when I tell ppl I'm doing the mini marathon they always ask how long it is.
BTW I have the greatest respect for marathon runners - dont know if i'd be able to do one. You obviously must be a mararthon runner - fair play. I'll just be so delighted to say i actually ran a 10k race!!

Strangely enough I think I have more respect to some who sets out to walk a marathon by themselves then to run a marathon! Strange, I know.

Not sure if you know or not, but there's an Athletics & running forum, you could ask them over there, they know tonnes about training for these things

Actually I saw over on the Athletics/running/Triathlon forum that there's a men's mini-marathon on May 4th in the Phoenix Park http://www.activeeurope.com/Events/index.cfm?AC=EventDetails_V2&E=73980

I don't really understand why people get so heated about the use of the word mini-marathon. If someone knows so little about running that they think a mini marathon and a marathon are the same, how is that an insult? How can a comment like that take from your achievement in running a marathon?

    Hi all,

I sent off application and credit card details for a place for myself and two friends in the mini marathon. Apparently they don't accept credit card details with the postal applications but they never sent the details back for me to recetify this and we have misssed the deadline. Does anybody have a number but cannot participate or know someone in a similar situation. I will refund your application fee and more if need be.

I know that technically these numbers are non transferable but we have al;ready raised several hundred euros for a childrens charity and we want to run this thing by hook or by crook. If we were to get the numbers we would just leave the names as is (we don't want any glory for this race) but be able to hand the funds over to our charity as promised. Please please try to help us..Ask everyone you know if they have a number they won't be using so that we can help this very worthy cause. It would be such a waste if we had to give all the money back to the donors.

    Thanks everyone:-)

I used the Hal Higdon novice program to train for my first 10k (in December 2008), and I'd have to strongly recommend it. At this stage there's only about 6 weeks to the mini-marathon, so you'd probably want to be at a stage where you can hop in at week 2-3 of the 10k program.
