Anyone know what exactly happens when you resize a partition with partation magic. Is it some trick in the FAT to make windows think the partition is bigger or does it actually make the partition bigger, ie is a partition resized from 100gb to 160gb exactly the same as a partition set at 160gb right from the start.

    It's magic. Hence, Partition Magic.

if you wanted to stick a 10GB partition at the start of the disc where there was already data, it would physically move all the data up 10GB of the disc, and modify the MBR to point to the new partitions. The resultant would be exactly the same as if you had made 2 partitions in the first place. AFAIK.
