Sorry if this has been discussed at some earlier time.

I seem to have lost both Ch.4 & Ch.5 from my UK card.

I know Ch.4 was there last Tuesday night, but had gone Wednesday morning.

I didn't see any other posts reporting this, so I am just wondering what the story is.

Was power from digibox disconnected at anytime? or card removed for long
period? Leave card in box for couple of hours, channels should return.:)

That's what I thought might be the matter.
Watched Ch.4 tuesday night and left card in the box.
Switched on TV next morning and Ch.4 was gone!
I will leave card in today & see if it returns.
    Thanks for the reply.
I guess it will return. I was just affraid it was gone for good.

    Two Questions.

    1. Has Channel 4 and Five dissappeared from the epg or are they there but asking you to phone a number to upgrade to these channels?.
2.Have you a phone line connected to your Sky Digibox?

If your answers are Yes the channels have dissappeared from Epg and Yes my phoneline is connected to my digibox, Then you may have had the card switched off by sky, because you are in Rep of Ireland
If your answer is The channels are still on epg, but asking me to phone to upgrade and my phoneline is not connected, then in 12-24 hours you will be able to watch Ch4 and Ch5 again.Just leave card in box and box turned on.

go Sky news with card out.
press red and wait for interactive
insert card fully. If not fully in C4 and Five will vanish.
    Press backup.

Wait till either Sky Customer or Sky news comes back on screen

Now the C4 and Five should be back. They vanish if card not fully in.

    Channels are still on EPG.
Phone line is connected to box.

Have left card if for 48 Hrs. now.
    Tried what Watty suggested.

    Still no Ch.4 & 5. :(

    Was phone connected?
Did anyone remove card an leave it lying about?

It sounds like either the card reader is broken (does any other card do anything different?) or the card is broken or the card is turned off.

Even if a card misses keys and won't decode C4 / Five they are still on EPG.

If the phone line has always been connected, chances are channels were
switched off. Detected! Uk card being used on irish number.

It's been over a week now.

Phone line has been connected at all times.

    Both chennels are on EPG.

    Normal card works ok.

Is there a way I can do a "forced download"?

Your box is not able to ring out with a UK card in as it's dialing a UK number. With the line connected you should see the phone light on the Skybox come on every 5 mins or so this you will see more often at night. I've left my card in for along time now with the line in. If you want to see that it's not connecting lift the phone when the phone light is on. You should here a voice saying your call could not be connect please try again. The box do not like cards being repeatedly changed

The phone line should probabily NOT be connected if you have a non-Irish card.

The phone line should only be connected for a mirror sub, or online ordering or if Sky expressly contact you and ask for it.

I just read the following which I found at :

    http://bytelive.com/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Jomtien%27s+famous+Sky+FAQ&pagenum=2
Any subscription card will give you these FTV channels but if you want
to receive them without subscribing to Sky then you can ring 0870 606
1111 and ask for a card, or visit http://www.freesatfromsky.com/ where
in the future you may be able to apply for a card also. The card costs
£20.00 and will last for at least 3 years or more. These and all Sky
cards can only be used officially in Sky digiboxes.
Is it possible my card has expired?

Also, does this mean that when buying a card you don't know how long it will work before it expires?

Where did you get the now non working UK viewing card?
Did you buy it on EBay?
There is a scam on ebay where a seller sells you a viewing card you pay for it and receive it and then the seller reports the card lost or stolen and Sky or FreesatfromSky send them a replacement and the cycle stars again.

No current cards have expired. It may be related to phone line connected on a box used with an Irish card.

Or who ever you got the card from may have cancelled it with Sky to get a replacement.

Yes, you don't know how long they last, but none have expired, only "turned off " for other reasons.

Yes, I did buy the card on Ebay.
In fact I bought three in all for mates of mine.
Other two appear to be working fine.
Guess it was due to the phone line been hooked up.
    Thanks for the help.
Guess I'll have to get another & make sure to disconnect phone line this time.

when you put in a UK card doesnt the box then try to dial a UK number by default? and the UK number then wouldnt work on an Irish land line. is that right or completely wrong?

Its exactly right, as I have said a few times before in different threads. ;)

so then having a phone line connected makes no difference at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭JohnDigital

Seems that way MM, the call when it dials out returns the "your call could not be connected, please check the number and dial again" message so it is not doing anything.

I have never had a confirmed report of phone line really beign the issue of FTV card not working.

Also too cards can be damaged or "killed" by Sky for a number of reasons.

It always seemed a good idea not to connect phone. Apart from anything else a lightning discharge even 100m from phone line ANY place between house and exchange can fry a modem or PC or Digibox or Fax..

I just got Multiroom installed last week here in the UK. While activating the new card Sky Customer Services diall the cards and can tell you if you have a phone line connected or not. I thought I did have both connected. Sky said "no you haven't" They were physically but I have a Community Alarm firstly connected to the BT line and eveything comming from there. I had to insert a splitter to the Line Box and connect the Community Alarm to one socket and my DSL Phone Line filter to the other. Then Sky ran another test and came back to me saying both boxes connected.

I was able to test the phone lines myself while trying to sort out the problem.
On your remote - Services, System Set Up, System Test and will should tell you your phone line status.

I was surprised when I spoke to Tech Support about my line problem. The wee laddie at the other end was able to tell me when I was previouly a little naughty with my cards. It will be kept on my file.
