They are both the same subject.the first shot was taken with a samsung picture phone and the second with my canon slr.I resized them but no other alterations were done.
    Any comments welcome

I think I wouldve changed the white balance on the camera to incandescent or tungsten to give it a nice blue tint. but you can do that afterwards anyway.

I dont know too much about this stuff but the boyf has an awful big interest in it so im learning bits and bobs off him! Think of me like the photo critic! :D
Anyway, If he was to show me those photos above i think the first thing id be more likely to say, is that you maybe should have approached it from a differant angle (Litterally) Rather than full on. Im not saying sneak up on it and go "Boo-Flash!" but perhaps try and focus on one particular aspect of the leaf.
But like i was saying.. i dont know too great a deal about this but, maybe try dimming them down slightly? Give the picture a bit more mystery.
Other than that thats a very good subject you picked there :D
Unlike that bone-head above a happen to appreciate the simplicity of nature/photography

    Good luck

A shot taken from the side might've been more interesting, in showing up more surface detail, ie frost on the edges, on the grass , you just giving a different viewpoint of the leaf e.t.c. (although pity we probaly will not get any more icy weather again till next winter)
    Anyways keep shooting..

Granted, he's being a bit of a prat about it, but he does have a point, regardless of how badly put it was. They are a little dull. As others have said, perhaps a different angle might make them more interesting, perhaps bring in a bit of the surroundings to improve the composition.

    well said..
tbh the pics look like they were taken with a camera phone, you didn't really take he most imaginative approach?

As I said the first shot was taken with a camera phone, the second with a canon 100fn slr camera with a sigma 28-300 hand held at full zoom.
I spoted the pic I took it and and two more.
If I had a tripod with me I would shot off half a roll with close up aspects of the leaf.
While the rest of the country was covered in snow all we got was a few mornings of frost.
If the sun was hitting the leaf it would of warmed it up a bit...on the other hand the frost would of been gone too.
I'll alter it a bit and see what I can do with it.

    Thank you for your comments.

There is very little you could do with that leaf to make it more appealing except persuade Victoria Silvestedt to use it as a fig leaf. If you'e going to shoot off half a roll of film make sure the subject has some promise. Otherwise you are just wasting your money.

I wouldn't normally use one of my own photos as an example, but you could have tried something like.. http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/25583483/

What time was your photo taken at btw? roughly?

Look, what you did is point a camera at a leaf and clicked the button. There is nothing different between what you did and giving a 6 year old child a camera at telling him/her to do the same thing. You didn't find an interesting angle, you didn't capture a "moment", you didn't convery an emotion, you didn't capture any real beauty, and it's even a pretty boring leaf at that.

Now stop calling me names please that stand up to your critics. "Any comments welcome" after all, eh?
And please state anything that you don't agree with me on.

    S.

Don't worry about that, it's gonna be a real challenge to post something worse than these two pictures.
