Overclockers have a 512mb X1800XT available for €384. Im thinking of buying it.

Am I right in thinking this was ATI's answer to the 7800Gtx? This seems like a pretty good deal especially since Komplett are selling 7800Gt's for €390.

Whats the best card at this price point?
Are there any reviews of the 7900Gt out yet?

Yup the X1800XT was ATI's answer to the NVIDIA 7800GTX 256MB, it is a good card and it's best advantage over the GF7 is that it can do AA on all current methods of HDR lighting whereas the GF7 series are more limited in this department.

7900GT & GTX reviews along with a hard launch are due out today probably in another few hours I would guess, I've heard rumours that the 7900GT matches the 7800 GTX 256MB performance wise but wait & see on that one.

If the 7900GT comes in cheaper and you dont mind the lack of AA support when using HDR lighting in some games it would be a good choice.

Get the 7900, you won't have any problems with directX10 and Vista when it comes out.

The GeForce 7 series (that includes the new 7900 parts) are Direct-X 9.0c compliant hardware same as ATI's 1K series, neither have Direct-X 10 support nor will they as new hardware is required due to the major changes in DX10.

I know NVIDIA have plans to launch G80 (GeForce 8) at the end of the year if everything goes to plan (their words) which will be DX10 compliant roughly around the same time as Vista ships (Vista comes with DX9 & DX10 support).

If you prioritize image quality I would go with the ATI part simply for the ability to use AA with HDR.

Update: Reviews are out, in summary it’s a tie.
7900GT = 7800GTX/X1800XT (overtakes the 7800GTX but the X1800XT is till marginally faster in some tests)
7900GTX = X1900XT/X1900XTX (bests the X1900 parts in some tests)

With that it mind I would go with the recommendation of the €333 special offer OcUK X1800XT over the 7900GT it comes in at the same price, retains the same performance plus you have more flexible image quality options for games.
