The Shield in 14:9 compromise widescreen on TV3

Noticed "The Shield" in 14:9 compromise widescreen on TV3 (via NTL Analog) last night for the first time - I think it's always been in standard 4:3 in the past.

But it looked "wrong", with top of characters heads often off the top of the screen and a real "zoomed in too far" look about it. As if the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen were placed OVER the actual 4:3 image.

    Anyone else notice this?

I compared my recording off TV3 with a version off the interweb and it appears that someone (not TV3 surely?) has simply chopped off the top & bottom of a 4:3 version to produce an amateurish lame-ass 14:9 (or 16:9) widescreen version where the top of every character's head is missing.

Now why would someone do that

That's thick. I'd rather see it in 4:3 if they were just gonna do that to make it "widescreen." The whole concept of widescreen is so you see more. But by cropping a 4:3 broadcast to 14:9 you lose more.
