    i have an .avi file and a .srt file which is supposed to be subtitles. any idea how i can link the two?

    Make sure the str and the avi have the same names and are in the same directory. If you're using Media Player Classic the subs should start automatically (if the above conditions are met). There might also be an option to load subs depending on what media player you're using.
