PSP video help...

I've just d/led a file in mp4 format from google video...but when I put it in the MP_ROOT folder on the PSP, renamed to the correct format, the file still shows as corrput data and refues to render.
The PSP is v1.5 firmware and the file plays fine in VLC. I've tried transcoding it with PSP9 and it aborts (I suppose because it can't transcode mp4->mp4....is the problem with the early firmware? Or have I missed something obvious?

I thought mp4 was like avi and ogg, just a container format that was dependant on different codecs for the actual compression?

yeah I should be more specific in that the video codec is h264....funnily enough MPC or WMP wouldn't play the video of this file (VLC had no problem)...

My point is that if google have this available as a specific d/l for the PSP, it should work without issue....which is why I'm thinking it has to be firmware related.

I'm going to output a file from PSP9 in the same bitrate and see if it'll play. This is an older version of PSP9 though...

VLC is better than the other players than handeling errors in the file. Have you redownloaded to be sure it didn't get corrupted along the way?

Yeah, and tried d/ling smaller files to be sure...problem is across the board on any I've tried.

    I found this whilst googling about firmware and h264;

So looks like I need to find a media player lol...h264 isn't supported...

You probably akready know this but the PSP needs a very specific naming convention for it's files to play
i.e: M4V00006.MP4 EDIT: Sorry you already pointed out that you did this.

it also needs the accompanying thumbnail file with the same name but with the .thm file extension
    i.e M4V00006.THM

I've found that apple mp4s wont play (i.e superman trailer) because they don't have the thumbnail and it seems that sony have done some jiggery pokery with their interpretation of the mp4 file.

I think your right to say that mp4 to mp4 conversion wont work, you might have to convert to another format and then convert back to sonys MP4.

I us 3gp for converting, its a simple enough tool that gets the job done.

    cheers
    D

Oh I forgot about the .thm file...where/how do I go about creating one and see if I can get that to work.

    [edit] bah, photoshop...I'm half asleep

No, made a .THM file for the .MP4 and no joy...still shows as incompatibe data....the episode of 24 I just transcoded from AVI is perfect as is the thumbnail I made for it.
Defo the firmware. Thx for the help.

did you say you made the thumbnail through photoshop? I'm not sure that'll do the trick.

The thumbnail needs to be made at the same time as your mp4 file, it also should be made by the same program doing the mp4 conversion.
If your using something that can convert to several vieo types make sure that something like 'PSP mp4' is selected.

That program 3gp that I metnioned will do all of the above including creating the right filenames for both files, I'm not convinced its your firmware cause I'm using the saem version as yourself.

    google for : 3gp psp

    or goto this site:

The only trouble with that is that mp4 d/led from google video don't have an accompanying .thm file.

I went looking about making them and it's fine once you properly rename/retag the .thm to have the same header as the mp4 itself.
I'm 100% sure this is a firmware problem...bout to go look for a homebrew media player with h264 support.

BTW the reason I know the photoshop .thm thing works is cos I transcoded a short clip and deleted the thm file and made my own and it plays and displays fine on the PSP. Thanks for the help though.
