Is global warming a myth?

I'm having second thoughts about global warming and harming the environment. How come the earth has been warming up since the last ice age and suddenly it everybody's fault so we have to pay charges and fines etc. to clean up our act. Is this the ultimate rip-off or what? If the planet is warming up since the ice age I don't honestly think anything we do is going to speed up or slow down the process anyway. I'd be interested to hear any opinions.

The rate of global warming over the last 25 years has increased out of all proportion. I don't know how old you are but believe me, the Winters we have had recently are a lot milder and drier than those of 20 - 25 years ago. Look at the polar ice caps. They are getting smaller each year. The polar bears have to wait longer for the sea in Canada to freeze over every year. It is a huge problem.

If you know enough about it, form your own decision. I formed the opinion, no way in hell is it a myth. :)

Maybe I should rephrase it, global warming is inevitable but are we being screwed by taxes as a result?

    Um no...
Do you know anything about it as a matter of interest? and the timeframes involved with and without pollution by humans?

    EDIT <wrong quote :D>
    Agree, it looks pretty real.

One thing that pisses me off about it is the purchasing of Pollution Credits, it just undoes the work of the countries who keep below the limit.

How come we always hear it was the worst winter/summer/rain/snow etc. since 19xx. If this is caused by global warming why has it happened before?

you could say that the fact that recently we're always hearing about such freak acts of nature is testimony to the fact the global warming is a reality.

It's definately a myth. At the moment I have the central heating on full whack and I'm still f****ing freezing.

Global warming is a very real danger, increased desertification and the cooling of the mid atlantic drift are two major changes that could be catastrophic for many species on earth.
The fact that we have to pay taxes etc. to fix this problem is because not until the 1970's did we even consider the threates of it. People think because its a gradual thing, we're ok, but we are seeing change in climate gradually since the 70's but what with industrialisation etc. the environment dosent stand a chance,

I think it's more of a future investment thing

Global Warming could be a myth. It could be a part of the earths natural lifecycle - Ice Age, Heatwave, Ice Age, Heat wave etc, in a wave pattern. But then again it could be a real danger that the earth might never recover from. I'm inclined to go with that one.

15.9c in wicklow today anyway at an official met station.
No rain here either ,just sunshine.

That compares to this time last week and snow showers with a max of 4c

Global warming, yes its here-just consider that in the last 15 years Dublin has had one decent snowfall (more than 4 inches).
    It's marginal though.

It will get really interesting when it melts ice bergs enough to divert the NAD.
Then we will have the weather for our Lat and long being as far north as Boston.

    Ie Cold.

Well I'm not so sure, freak acts of nature aren't really new. Now we have instant news etc. and as soon as so much as a gale force wind knocks some slates off a house we hear about, but a couple hundred years ago these things could have happened at the same frequency its just that the whole world didn't hear about them.

it may be true there has been an increase in these acts of nature since the 70s or whatever but that is 30 years out of a couple billion of the planet's existence, there has more than likely been times like these before during the life of the planet. Who's to say there wasn't a 30 year period 3,000 years ago where there were way more tsunamis / natural disasters?

Its agreed that the planet is warming up but I think its going to warm up anyway, that seems to be the general plan but I would hate to think that world governments are going to make us pay anyway. The bottom line is the planet is warming up and has been for millions of years, we may slow its progress but are we only delaying the inevitable?

Of course. (if not global warming it would be some thing else)

If theres a problem theres a solution. And if the solution was so imperitive it would not cost. (or at least be more efficient)

Boston is 42N; we (Dublin) are 53N.

    For comparison:

    Berlin (52° 31'N)
    Edmonton, Canada (53° 34'N)

Or for comparison in the southern Hemisphere:

    Stanley, Falkland Is (51° 42'S)
Punta Arenas is about 54 S, the most southerly city in the world.

    Some data for Punta Arenas:

Mean temps for the last calendar year, by month:

    March: 8
    April: 6
    May: 2
    June: 0
    July: 2
    August: 2
    September: 5
    October: 6
    November: 8
    December: 10
    January: 11
    February: 10

Those are the mean temps, i.e. the average of daytime and nighttime temps.

It's an ill wind that blows no good, as the saying goes, so maybe we could host the Winter Olympics. :D
