I will be turning 16 soon. I have a moped:D . But I will need to get a license and insurance. I have inquired about insurance and it is going to cost me about €1000. I have a few questions. The day if my birthday, can I go to the local council office and apply for my licence? Is that a resonable amount to pay for insurance? I heard that foreigners get insurance called international insurance and it only costs them €50 for the year, is this true? If so can I avail of it?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. I don't suppose it would be possible to do the provisional before I am 16, would it?

I rang up a motorbike shop and got them to get me a quote. They named the company, I think it was Aon, but I find it hard to believe that it is this price. Even though you think it is cheap, I myself think it is dear. The reason why you think it is "cheap" is because I live down in Meath, unfortunelty:D , but the insurance is cheaper down here for some reason. I know this for a fact:rolleyes: .

You could always do the theory test on your birthday, pass it and then get the prov licence(well a receipt but its legal) on the same day. Ring Aon yourself and get a quote thou so you know where you stand - get them to post it to you so you have proof - sometimes when you call them back the quote has magically increased!

EDIT - you should check out this thread - to get an idea of what insurance everybody is paying....

I had a quick look through that thread before. Thanks for the link anyway. I have put in for an online quote, so I should be hearing from them tomorrow. On my birthday can I order the insurance. How do I go about paying for it?

Yeah that's possible. The cert is valid for 2 years so you could do it now. Book soon as the waiting list isn't as short as it was (could be a few weeks!).

What you are probably hearing about is people getting insured in their country of origin (eg Latvia) with an insurer there that allows them to drive and be covered in any of the EU states regardless of where they are actually living. There is a possibility that this insurance costs them €50 but I have no actual idea of the real cost.

You could avail of international insurance. Ask the insurance company when you get your quote if you are covered for international driving. If they say yes then off you go. Of course, your licence will not be valid in any other country because it is only provisional.

If you want to drive here internationally, give some insurers in other EU states a ring and see if they will quote you. As far as I know there is nothing stopping you doing so. Whether they oblige is of course another matter.

The only other option insurance wise in this country is Carol Nash, however I doubt their quote will be anything near AON's one.

Safe driving. Buy some proper protective clothing and wear it...

If you are talking to Aon directly and they ask you "Do you drive regularly in Dublin?".... SAY NOOOOO!!! Very important because on average your quote will be DOUBLED if you answer yes.
Like me, you have the great (but very unfair!) advantage of having a Meath address ;)

Thanks for all your reply's. But does anyone know of any links that would offer international bik insurance for Ireland. I have googled it, but with no joy. Thanks very much.

As you are new to the insurance market in this country I will spare you a lot of effort. Basically there isn't or *everyone* would be off like a flash to pay €50 for insurance...

The difficulty is that IFSRA here regulate financial/insurance etc and the products sold in this country have to "conform". Ze Germans or whoever have a different system and would most likely prefer to sell under their terms and conditions rather than ours.

There are several cases in various EU organisations about "cross border service initiatives", but until it emerges from the beurocratic merry-go-round, have to stump up the cash or not whichever you decide.

If you really want to try, google.de/.nl.fr etc for insurance in the respective languages.... Humour us with the results of your efforts too.

...my brief search listed many companies with online quotes. Honda CBF600 (restricted according to my licence), other drivers, and driving abroad. I did have to lie with my address though...

Fahrzeugart: Kraftrad oder -roller ohne Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung
    Hersteller: HONDA
    Typ (Verkaufsbezeichnung): PC 36 (CB600F)
    Typ-Nummer: 126
    Leistung: 33 PS / 24 KW
Halter: Das Fahrzeug ist auf mich zugelassen.
    Ortskennzeichen: H
    Zulassungsbehörde: Landkreis

    Gesamtbeitrag: jährlich 131,05 €
    halbjährlich 67,49 €
    vierteljährlich 34,40 €

Thanks for your reply's. I have had a look at the above post, and found it very interesting. I have been on to Aon, and they have quoted me €1,009 for the year. Even though I am only 16;) . Anyway's, can I do my driving license before I am 16 or is it just the theory test? How much will it cost to get the driver license and theory test?

    Hi,

as far as i know a theory test is €35.00 or it was when i done mine 2 years ago. if you pass they give you a cert that you take to your local taxation office with your licence application form, 2 passport size photos and another €15.00 to pay for your licence. about doing all this before your 16....that i dont know. i have heard that no you cant but that could be wrong. hope the other stuff helped.

    Would this invalidate your insurnace.
I gave AON my Tipperary address as I use my home address for everything.
When they asked would I be using it in Dublin, I said yes as I work here Monday to Friday.

Are there significant savings by saying you're never in Dublin? I've a country address so it could be done but just worried about the consequences

Well, the question is kinda vague in the first place: Do you drive regularly in Dublin? If you have an accident in Dublin, there really isn't any way for them to know if you've been driving in Dublin every day or not. They'll still have to cover you. I wouldn't feel too guilty about saying it either tbh.. After all they are the ones screwing you in the vast majority of cases!

It's a bit unfair to be penalised for driving in Dublin since you pay your premium to be covered nationally. I find Dublin far safer on my bike than Galway as at least I now can use bus-lanes. My current premium is twice what I paid when I was in Belfast too.

I could tell AON I don't drive in Dublin often but if they ask where I work(IFSC), then surely they'll cop on. Tipperary to Dublin is not a commutable distance so it would seem strange.

I may try it when my premium expires. Anyone else use their bike in Dublin and not tell AON?

I'm not advocting fraud here so please don't flame me

Technically yes. At the core of it, since you've lied on your insurance application, then the insurance certificate is technically not valid. In the past, quotes used to be based on the home address, but then the companies realised so many people were giving country addresses but driving in cities, that most introduced the "area of use" question for any type of vehicle.

Thanks Seamus, I won't do it so

I'll be 25 at next premium renewal so hopefully I'll see a healthy reduction anyway

I think you're right micmclo. For the sake of saving a few hundred euros you could lose your premium and ncb - it's not really worth it...
