I've a reasonably high spec machine, 3.6ghz processor with 2 gigs or ram. Its a year old, but recently my pc has become sluggish and the cpu usage shoots up from 1 or 2% to 100% anywhere from 15 minutes to 5 hours after been powered up, its become more of a common occurence over the past 2 weeks, I should add that it doesnt happen all the time. Its not as if I have a load of processes running, I have 35 running from start up. Any idea what could be causing this?

Probably your virus checker putting up the cpu usage. I found Norton to be heavy on cpu from time to time. Check the running processes via task manager which will tell you what is using up your cpu.

Could also be spyware in the system try running a full system scan with MS Defender.

Also how long does the CPU usage remain at 100% for seconds, minutes ?

most of the time if fails to close the process thats hogging the cpu and it just remains at 100% until i power it off, which i have to do by holding in the power button.

use taskmgr or procexp to see what is using the cpu

use msconfig to start the pc in minimal config and then add stuff back in one by one to id it

Which process is it that's showing the most CPU usage?

sometimes the mind doesn't work at times like this so ......

right click on task bar ......

    select task manager ......

    select processes tab .....

double click on CPU col heading ....... (you may need to do this twice)

you will now see the process that is taking all your cpu .....

    what is it called ....?

if it's not obvious you could always Google the process name ....

But do tell us what you see ....

it appears to be zone alarm and ms antispyware that are causing it most of the time (vsmon.exe & gcasDtServ.exe). i might switch to sygate to see if it makes a difference.
