I got a new pc recently its a dell dimension 5150 Pentium 4 3.00ghz ht technology but when i click properties on my computer it comes up like this Pentium 4 3.00ghz 4.83ghz(sometimes varies), .............. whats it doing ? overclocking itself ? any ideas ?:(

also got 512 mb ram and has a x600 256 ati radeon gfx pci express !
now the problem with the graphics is playing games such as hl2 and hl and tfc and cs:s and dod:s it seems like the game is running in slow motion i seem 2 be in slow motion in hl1 mods but in hl2 mods im a step or 2 behind the man infront of me fps are grand steady 70 fps on hl2 mods and 100 in hl1 mods i havent a clue what the problem is at all ? anyone ever have this problem or have a solution ?:(

    Thnx for any help
    Andy ! :)

Sounds like something is up alright though auto overclocking doesn't sound right perhaps a cooling problem and the P4 is clock throttling.

What you could do is download CPU-Z and it will tell you the details of your CPU including the actual real time speed see if it is jumping around a bit or anything looks wrong (you can post a screenshot if not sure what to make of the details).

If you want to log the data use RM clock which will record the clock speed of the system and write it to txt file to see what happens during your average usage of the PC.

How to rectify the problem I don't really know but the first thing I would do is if Dell have released a bios update for the motherboard flash it.

As for the graphics card if you haven't use ATI's 6.3 latest driver whatever came with the Dell system could be out of date.

Wouldn't hurt either to update the Intel chipset drivers.

try that program seems 2 be fine clocking at 2794mhz

I think I know what it might be if you have a Pentium 4 630 it should be running at 3Ghz not 2794Mhz.

The reason why is Intel have a feature on their CPU's called Speedstep that lowers the CPU speed in fact its a bit like AMD's Cool & Quiet only not as good.

Its main purpose is to prolong battery life but in a desktop it's rigged to behave like AMD's feature in that it lowers clock speed when idle so the CPU cooler doesn’t have to run as fast and hence runs quieter or simply to lower the heat output.

Anyway to check if this is enabled go into the control panel->power options and see if the power scheme is set to “minimal power management” if so then speedstep is enabled and that explains the clock speed discrepancy (basically windows reads info from CPUs and the alternate clock speed throws it off which is why it says a 4Ghz P4 in the properties).

To disable this feature if you desire set the power management to another mode such as "always on" or go into the bios and look for a Enhanced INTEL Speedstep Technology (EIST) reference and set it to disabled. That will stop it lowering the CPU's clock speed when idle or doing not very taxing CPU tasks, the speed issues with Half Life "could" be connected to the various states the CPU jumps through so do disable it to see if the slow down in the HL games stops.
