    when talking to someone over the phone are they legally obliged to give you their surname and if not why not?

    strange one i know but i get asked that the odd time in work and would be nice to have an answer

    You will have to give a lot more detail to this question to get a more specific answer. Are you talking about a business enviroment?

    I personally cant think of any situation where you would be legally oblidged to identify yourself. Possibly while dealing with an operator you would be entitled to get them to identify themselves (but an employee number would suffice) in order to complain about them to their superiors. But this would be a company rule rather then a legal obligation.

    Anyway the bottom line is that any legal right you might have would be satisfied by the person telling you what company they are working for imo.

    well hypotethically if a person worked in a call center and was asked for their second name are they legally obliged to give it and if not why not under what law?

    Only if you would normally be legally obliged to give it (e.g. to a garda, but you could ask the garda to prove they were a garda).

    If its an irate customer. No you do not have to give your full name. Perhaps agree a stage name with your boss. I knew someone called Concepta, who was "Jane" in the call centre. the same can apply to surnames.
