Safari beachballing on boards

Boards.ie turns out to be one of those sites that makes Safari (2.0.3) beachball madly. What's the problem?

Now I'm wishing they had a little rainbow smiley to use as a post icon... :)

Try disabling javascript to check if it's the dropdown menu. I think I used to have that problem ages ago when I used Safari.

Yeah, had the same thing happening. Started using firefox. Disabled Java thingy. Boards whole lot quicker but no menu at the top or quick reply thing.
    Going back to Firefox

Oh yes, it's JavaScript. Again. I was trying to kid myself it had been fixed.

Works fine for me ?! Sometimes the add server that supplies the banners for boards are slow to respond and I get beachballs. To fix this I just edit the hosts file on the proxy or your client to point to 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0 when that ad-site (www.star-adserver.com) is accessed.

You can also stop the java system from caching applets using the controlpanel in <MacHD>/Applications/Utilities/Java. Clearing the cache can also cure some java issues.

Boards uses JavaScript, not Java. They're only distantly related.

Good that it works for you, though. Do you have loads of RAM?

If not, I suppose I might have a plug-in conflict.

You're right of course, sorry, just in from work. Just as an aside, did the menus at the top start out life as dhtml ? I though I read this in the feedback forum when they were introduced. I sometimes get problems with the menu disappearing before I can click the links.

Obviously the Java thing has never been tried by me but certainly editing the host file makes browsing an altogether more pleasent experience. Particularly handy if you're on dial up. As for RAM, yes loads - 1.5GB on a Dual G5 Powermac.

    just in from work
    Wow, at midnight?

Just tried disabling plug-ins, which doesn't make a difference. I've never used a version of Safari which didn't have JavaScript problems.

Ack, Camino and iCab beachball (less) on boards.ie too. I am suffering for lack of RAM...

Don't know about the dhtml, I'm a newbie.

Does OS X use a hosts file by default? I'm lazy, I just use PithHelmet.

Yeah shift work is a drag.

There is a hosts file in /etc but you need to be be root to edit it.

I use Smoothwall which is a lightweight internet gateway/firewall system that runs on an external low spec PC (Cel266/64MB/4.3GB).

It's possible to download hosts files that contain all the ad servers. I've just added about 20 or 30 to the hosts file in the smoothwall box that effect the sites I use most. Oceanfree for example is covered with links to external adservers. Stops popups too if configured.

On topic have you tried clearing the Safari cache and getting rid of any stored cookies. The first is in the Safari menu / Empty Cache - the second is in Safari/Preferences/Security/Show Cookies. Even on an iMac 350MHz/256MB/Panther Boards ran fine without delays. Are you on Broadband or dial-up btw?

Yeah. As I say, I've always had JavaScript problems w/ Safari (bit surprised at the other browsers doing it though).

It's not that bad if I only keep one or two boards tabs open at a time.

    Slow broadband.

I want the secret of how people do this. I have a 366MHz/192MB iBook (not this machine), and found Panther unbearable. OS 9 is unbearable anyway (for anything serious). BSD hates the video card. And then I read posts on Apple fansites saying people happily run Tiger on these things... maybe they're just more patient than me.

Just out of interest how many users have you got defined on your mac ?

If only 1 try creating a new user account - log in to it and see if Safari does the same again ? If this works fine try moving the Safari .plist file to the desktop so it creates a new one when launched.

I don't have any beachball, just a delay with a normal cursor, due to the java.
