Cybersqatting and .EU Domains

I see the new .EU domain is begining to appear. One of the ones I registered last year went live today - Lilyobriens.eu

I did a sniff around and I see there have been 12 different applications for google.eu and 15 for microsoft.eu. Looks like, despite all the precautions, there is going to be some mighty domain-squatting going on :D

A registration can be objected to if it is registered for squatting purposes. With only 3000 or so active .eu domains after three or so months and hundreds of thousands of applications, these .eu bozos make IEDR look downright efficient by comparison. Most of those fraudulent .eu applications will fail because the paperwork just isn't there to support them.

As far is I can make out though, if you register a company name in any European country, you are then entitled to that name.

Fair enough, the likes of Microsoft will object [and win], but for smaller organisations there may be problems. I know of a couple of cases where this applies. A.I.B. for example, which seems to be going to a German firm of architects.

I doubt there'll be much in the way of cybersqatting, but there are going to be a lot of frustrated companies.....

There is even cybersquatting in .ie and some of the domains are recently registered. Squatters are a fact of life. The problem is with the incompetent fools in the registries who permit them to exist.
