SATA HD not working?

I bought a second-hand 120GB Seagate SATA HD on Ebay but I am having problems installing. My primary drive is IDE and works fine, the new drive is for backup, storage, etc.

My BIOS wont recognise it - I am getting install errors when booting through the Promise and VIA SATA controller screens (motherboard is an ASUS A8V Deluxe), consequently it is not showing up in Windows XP. I have enabled all the BIOS SATA options and installed the drivers in Windows.

The drive is making some very strange clicking and grinding noises when the PC is booting - might the HD be broken or might this be due to the fact the HD came from another PC and probably needs re-formating?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
