Wireless Printer - what's needed?

I want to set up a wireless printer with my laptop - F Siemens Amilo Pro, WiFi enabled.

Have seen printers advertised as wireless, such as Brother DCP340CW (in Argos) but would I still need a router and/or wireless print server?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,

Had the same problem myself before wanted to get a wireless printer and read about all sorts of different setups with cables and adapters.

Best printer I found was the canon ip 4200r, It allows you to use the printer over wireless/ cable / network cable. Its an amazing printer, that can literally do EVERYTHING:
Has 2 areas for loading paper, so you can have both photo paper and normal paper.
Can print directly on printable cd's
    Can print on overhead paper.
Can automatically be set to print on backs of sheets to save paper (a.k.a duplex printing).
Theres 4 f us in college in our house and we print alot and there hasn't being a job we couldn't get it to do.
Cartridges are very cheap (inkjet.ie has a whole set €22), running costs are the biggest cost with any printer, this one is very low! Canon can be €22 or more for 1 cartidge!

Bad news is you will still need a router or a wireless access point (same thing, technical difference, router better), but with such low running costs it will pay dividends in the long run.

The newer version of my printer (IP5200r) is about €190 with postage from pixmania.ie.

Also if your thinking of a router as well havew a look at this one also on pixmania.

Another good thing about this printer is the short warm up time, you can literally plug it out, bring it to another room and start printing!

hope that was some help to ya

    Hi,

If you buy a wireless printer, it could be blue-tooth or wifi.
You will see Blue-tooth or 802.11b/g or something to that effect on the printer.

You don't necessarily need a wireless router for the 802.11 route.
You could use an Ad Hoc connection with a wireless card on you PC. The more reliable is to use a wireless router though. It doesn't necessarily need to be DSL enabled (for broadband usage), but If you are going to get broadband you should enquire about a wireless router which would save you some extra outlay.

The blue-tooth route in simpler but shorter range, you will need a blue-tooth dongle for this type of set-up.

    Hope this helps

    Hi

    Thanks for those suggestions.

Superman, the link to Pixmania is really useful, as it also has the Brother printer I was thinking of, so I can compare it to others & their pricing is excellent. Also has other stuff I need! Thanks for the tip!

bishopLen, the printer I was considering is Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, so may go for this & either wireless card or router.

    Thanks again, guys.

Quite a number of people have used Pixmania & have had mixed success. Do a Search here for more info. Just a heads-up.

you may also want to have a look through the Useful web sites - buying hardware / reviews / general sticky in Comp/Tech & compare prices.
