Audio/Video Plug-ins

In the last couple of days I've been having issues with being able to watch certain video clips and listen to certain yokes using quicktime. It's happened on a couple of different things.

The error messages I get is that I need to retrieve an audio/mpeg or video/quicktime plug-in respectively (both of which i would've always presumed I had).
It also warned me to make sure java, javascript and software installation were enabled and they are, so that's not the issue.

It says I can get it from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/win.html and that I just go there and select the ones I need.

But I'm damned if I can find what I need. I was searching on the terms but keep getting reams of seemingly irrelevant results.

Is there anyone who could just point me in the direction of how to get what I need? There have been a few instances of late of not being able to see/hear things and I wanna sort it.

    Thanks a million

First off what sort of files (audio & video) are you trying to play ?

If you don't have it ffdshow is a good general purpose audio/video decoder it supports a good range of formats that allow playback in directshow players like WMP or MPC.

Download the decoder from the first link and let ffdshow take the association for the various file formats preselected, untick post processing and well volume normalization is up to you. After that try whatever you want to play in WMP or MPC, be aware that Quicktime is not a directshow compatible player and is limited to it's own format's that it can play. You can get some limited Apple approved plug-ins along with an unofficial one that allows playback of XviD files in Quicktime under Windows but I cant see why you would want to as Quicktime is so buggy.
