I was at the dentist the other day. I had one tooth in bits and I went for the root deal to save it. It cost me 1400 euro for 1.5 hours work over 2 days to do the root canal and a rebuild the tooth and a crown. Is this normal because to be honest I feel ripped off even though I diddnt want a tooth missing.

That's scandalous. I paid around 100 euro for a cosmetic root canal with my dentist in Newry. I had post and bridge work done and six mercury fillings replaced and it cost me 1/3 what it would have cost here in Dublin. But 1400 sounds extortionate! I had a toothache last summer and a dentist in town told me i'd need a root canal and crown at a cost of 800 euro. I smelt a rat so went back to my normal dentist in Newry who could see nothing wrong with the nerve, all it needed was a simple filling :-/

There's no justification for the massive price differences either side of the border IMO

? Pardon my ignorance but what is a cosmetic root canal?

As for cost it depends on which tooth. Front teeth have one canal so they cost a lot less. Back teeth can have sometimes 5 canals and they are very hard to access and see. A front tooth can cost about 200 - 400 euro and a back tooth can cost 400 - 1000 euro. Specialists call endodontists do nothing but root canals and are very skilled particularly if its difficult or a back tooth. They cost more but it is well worth every penny in my humble opinion. After that a filling need to be put into the tooth or sometimes a post down the roots to hold in a filling. Then a crown is put on to reinforce the now compromised tooth. If no crown is placed then the literature suggests that 50% will fracture (often catastrophically) within 3 years! So in all it can cost well over 1000 euro for a simple front tooth. But remember YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR .High quality dentistry take lots of time and cost a lot. If you paid a lot and it didn't take very long something is wrong. If it cost very little and took very little time then you will pay to get it done correctly in a few years. Shop around on price but always be sure you are getting a good job done in YOUR mouth not just a cheap one.

I would have thought that was obvious...Cosmetic root canal - a root canal done to facilitate cosmetic dental work, not done because the tooth was unviable.

In my case I had a tooth missing, and in order to put a bridge on, my dentist had to do a root canal and a crown on one of the adjoining teeth as it was twisted round and wouldn't have worked with a bridge, in addition to my not liking how it looked.
