D50 White Problem

    Hi,
I have a Nikon D50 and when I take a picture outside using the auto setting any bright white object appears as a flashing Black/White image. I have tried several other settings but I still have the same problem. Is there a technical name for this as I could look it up in the manual.
    Tks.

Are you looking at the highlights view? It's probably telling you that (I think this is how they say it) the highlights are blown in that area (overexposed basically or burned if you think film). Pressing up or down on the view of the image shows you the different views. Read up the manual a bit on aperture priority (and the other options). A shorter exposure will help. It's basically too bright so you're loosing the detail.
