PETER MARK, seriously over priced (male perspective)

got the hair cut the other day, normaly would go to the grafton barber, or the waldorf, good haircut for under €20 in both places, although grafton would put a bit more effort in.

so, for a change, i decided to see what all the fuss was about with the likes of toni and guy and peter mark. i knew i'd be paying in and around €40, but i've no problem paying for a service that's worth it.

toni and guy all booked, up, so i give peter mark on grafton street a call, and book an appointment, "what am i having done" they ask, "hair cut please"

first impression, it sounded like i was at the airport, was very busy, lots of hair dryers, not too bothered, just looking for a good hair cut.

i'm led over to a sink, where i get my hair washed, grand.

    then, the haircut.

she took less than 10 min, was a definit impression of being rushed, like when you're at an overpriced bad restaurnat, and they want your table after an hour.

i'm paying twice that of grafton barber, and i'm getting half the service.

maybe this is because i'm not getting any lady treatments done?

anyway, €34 they charge me, complete rip off.

i'm not going to paint other high end establishments with this bad brush, and would give the likes of toni and guy a go.

to sum up, peter mark are overpriced crap, well if you're a straight guy looking for a quality haircut.

Welcome to women's world, 34 is standard for a haircut, I've been charged 40 once and they did NOT do a good job
Guys always think anything over 10euro is overpriced anyway ;)

Speaking of which, where is a good place for a bloke to get a decent hair-cut - something a bit more than a barbers?

you can't compare a womans haircut to a non metro sexual guys hair cut.

a poor student, or tight ass might think anything over €10 is overpriced.

€16 - €20 is the norm for an above adverage guys hair cut.

€40 would be the high end of the market for a guys haircut, i'm sure there's more expensive, but hey, i could buy a scarf in brown thomas for €800 if i was that way inclined.

You can if they're as short as mine, or if the hair is so long it's just chop chop across the bottom
For styling then yeah you can't compare

why the fúck would any guy go into Peter Mark? What exactly were you expecting? I knew a guy who was waiting on a lady friend who was getting her hair done, so he decided to get a hair cut, just the usual short back and sides job, cost over 30 euro i think, he was not a happy camper.

I'd rather pay over the odds for a decent cut than get butchered!! But it all depends on where you go, Toni and Guy cut hair somewhat differently to other places. Once I got my hair cut there, I never went anywhere else!

Do hairdressers ever do what you ask them to anyway?

I got my hair done last night in Peter Mark's in Cork...
They had my friend and I wait for an hour before anyone actually did anything with us. (although I had made appointments for both of us for 6.30) We were there for 6.20pm, and got out at 8.45pm, €112.50 later (I got a full head of mesh highlights) and noone's noticed :(

I stopped going to peter mark's years ago. I used to go when I was in secondary school, but stopped, the service was not worth the money. I started going to hugh campell's at home last year; it's more expensive, about €50 but they really listen to you, give great advice and everybody notices when I get my hair cut!

Gents, if you like something a little more artistic than a number 4, see this dame:

    Tamar (only see her)
    Lunatic Fringe
    Grafton St (above Next)
    01 679 3794

No, I'm not on commission and I don't get a discount.

She cuts men's hair for about EUR 32 and women's for EUR 57. She's the director so it's a top job. She books out really quickly so plan ahead.

PS: It's okay for blokes to spend money on their barnet. A dreadful cut can spoil the whole look. ;)

    noone's noticed :(

*note to self : complement Dizzy's hair at beers....

You don't have to be a metrosexual to want a decent hair cut. We had a training session today with a guy who looked like his mammy cut his hair. He looked ridiculous. A good hair cut is well worth a few extra quid.

I have long hair and I like to torment the poor people in the Grafton Barbers and make them cut it. I love the face's on them when I walk in , f*cking priceless. They really have to earn their €16 :D

I go to my local Peter Mark and find it really good. It's just a suburban one.
Different Peter Marks seem to charge different prices. This one seems quite cheap and they always do a good job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Scraggs

My local peter mark has the same conveyor belt type attitude to customers. I only go there when i cant get an appointment anywhere else and will never get a colour done again not after the disaster of Feb 2004...
I'd love to try Toni and Guy but unfortunately my student budget doesnt allow it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,055 ✭✭✭snickerpuss

I got a cut in peter marks the other day and it was €51, expensive but it always looks great.
I only get my hair cut like twice a year so i'm not overly bothered.

I always get a short back and sides wherever I get my hair cut. A very standard haircut, no-one ever passes any notice of it. I always get it cut on Parnell Street as it's near where I work and it costs me €9.
I was lounging around at home last Saturday and decided to get it cut in Balbriggan as it was quite out of control at this stage. Got it cut in the local barber, cost me €12 and I felt the guy did a good job.

Everyone I work with isn't too concerned with fashion, but they all mentiond the fact I had got my haircut and that it was a really good job. Even the ladies in work mentioned it. Just €12!

That's odd, I've gone to Peter Marks for probably the last 15 years, mostly out of habit these days because I don't trust barbers to do anything more than a buzz-cut. They generally take about 20-30 mins on it, and last time I was charged 26.50 I believe.

They're good in that they're consistent I think. But you can generally find a good local barber who will do the same cut for half the price (the problem is ending up with **** haircuts while you look for the good barber amongst the **** ones).

I could recommend a few good ones but I think there's already a thread on this forum about that :)

this was the one on grafton street.

    €34 for a haircut - holy ****e!

The most expensive haircut I've ever had was in some alternative hair place in Blanchardstown - my hair was approaching shoulder length and I didn't want it butchered, so I shelled out €20-ish, and they did a very good job, well worth it. That said, I've found a place in Belfast that can give just as good a cut for £8, so €34 seems extremely excessive...

Believe me, if you had longish hair you wouldn't go to a barbers. I've been landed with hair that could have been ripped straight off a dyke loads of time!

I've been to Peter Mark a few times, but wasn't really happy with the service or cut.

Just tried Toni and Guy the other week and I'm very happy with how it turned out!

alternatively for broke students types on the top floor of the building is the hairdressing school where you can get your hair done really cheaply, with even cheaper rates for students. i know its a bit of a risk but my sister got her hair cut there and it was fine.

plus if you just want a simple all over colour (not blonde) how wrong could it go?, or maybe don't answer that:)

im sorry but Peter Marks is THE ****test place ever to get ur hair done ive had mine done numerous times there and hated it every time.they are horrific.they employ knackers who leave school early.i can cut my own hair better.

I usually go to the Talbot street or Jervis Centre branch. I find it surprising that they would charge €8 more at a salon 5 mins away ...

Yup. I've gotten my hair done in T&G a few times though, and always felt like it was value for money - I tried Peter Mark and they were utterly crap - the Waldorf does a much better job than them. But T&G was a lot better :)

I HATE Peter Marks, I've tried a few different locations in Cork, each time they've kept me waiting ages, left me half way through to go work on someone else and then rushed through the rest of my cut, not to mention the fact that they never seem to listen to what you want. Jeff Devine's in Wilton is much better for a similar price, they really take their time and make you feel valued.

Plus, when hubby got a hair cut there, they trimed his eyebrows and round his ears too! He was well impressed (if a little embarresed!) It was pricey for a mens cut, but at least they threw in a few extras!

I think it depends on the stylist you get. I go to a Peter Marks across the road from my work and wouldnt let half the girls there near my hair but there is one who is just brilliant. I always make my appointments with her and she does a fabulous job every time. I wouldnt be too happy to spend the 40euro with anyone else!
