    I feel envious when I see the streams of threads/topics for Festivals in Ireland:

    * Oxegen
    * Slane
    * Marlay Park
    * Download
    * Electric Picnic
    * HiFi Festival
    * Etc Etc

    We need a Punk-Ska-Oi type fest with the big band names doing an annual trip to Ireland. Who's in favour?

    Actually come to think of it what ever happened to the band "LeatherFace" are they split up or what?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

    **** the big bands. We have Leechrum.

    Leatherface played wasted last year, so I reckon they're still goin.

    Stamping ground? I dunno if it would pull in enough people. Even Waster fest is finished now. Theres no reason why a small weekend festival couldnt be arranged though with national bands

    The Holidays In the Sun event at Vicar St was a 3 day gig, maybe a killer one day line-up would deliver the crowds.

    Of course the local acts would play on the lineup also - but needs the big names to position itself as "the" annual Punk-Ska-Oi event in Ireland. In fact the more events the merrier!

    Yes but promoter lost money on that.

    Great gig though and also yes I would love the ideas u suggested.

    What bands would people be interested in seeing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 561 ✭✭✭Anarchist

    Er Punk bands/Hardcore/oi/Street

    No. It needs the "big names" to make a profit and improve DGAB's portfolio of "bands we played with".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

    haha. well there about 15 bands worth listening to in this country (inc north) so if you were to bring in one or 2 bigger name bands you could do it.

    My apologies. I thought yas wanted to get all the bands who play Oxegen/Slane/Marley Park, etc to play one big gig for us all. Picked up wrong.

    To What End?

    Somehow get them to play

    Sounds like a fun day out alright.

    i think a punk/punk rock/ska festival would be great, possibly start it as a one day thing then maybe go to a two day dealy. that'd be sweet

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

    Again, it's already there. It's called Leechrum.

    www.leechrum.com

    If ya want bigger bands playin just beg Jasper to do a bank job, they're all the rage these days anyway :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

    As dregin said. Leechrum is in the process of getting a licence for next year. What chance would a new festival have of getting a crowd when no one even knows that there's already one there. Also, GGI should be back next summer.

    I was thinking of a one dayer in Dublin though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

    how about widening the scope a bit to attract a bigger audience? add reggae bands to the bill?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭moshmonkey666

    sure there will be the GGI festival again next year! i think its next year! John Toxic lost loads of money in the holiday in the sun all dayer, id say you could pull off an medium sized all dayer in the voodoo lounge maybe! a large one or a weekend one would never work here unfortunitely, get maybe 2/3 bands from the uk and the rest Irish like Runnin Riot, Dangerfields, 20 Bulls Each, Mellow Dramatic and a load more! i know id be there!

    Lazy ****. I haven't been to GGI and am told it was ****in great last time it was here, but Leechrum was absolutely great last year. Reggae isn't great at all. There was a bit of ska goin on last year at Leechrum though. Maybe there was reggae..... I missed it.

    We shouldn't have to try to attract a bigger audience though, this should be a Punk fest and nothing else ( I know a bit of Punk-ska will show it's head)
    I also think a Dublin show would be good too as well as Leechrum.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

    I know i could probably get the lobotomies ( Mellow dramatic are gone) down as well as the Dangerfields. Few other bands from around the way too. Who else would people like to see play an all dayer? Ill root around and see what the score is.

    I remember hearing about Jim leaving Mellow Dramatic and out came Lobotonies, didnt know Mellow Dramatic finished! dont forget letterkennys own Die Fedz :D

    but if there was an all dayer i know id be there and if your expenses werent too high you'd have no bother covering costs, question is, do you get a foreign band? and if so, who? who can draw a crowd without charging an arm and a leg? ive learnt all this from blowing my money on Sacrifice, which 20 Bulls Each were announced as metal legends lol

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

    GWAN LETTERKENNY! heard that whole deal with some bands bein booked for the casbah and the owner finding out they were punk and cancelling them all.b It isn't a bad wee venue at all but was ****in awful for new year's eve with some pure dodgy covers crap playin.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

    Letterkenny is a great spot

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 340 ✭✭Frank Cronin

    Providing the location is somewhat close to an airport it does not really matter where it is geographically, although promoters would be more inclined toward Dublin due to population size. Maybe Leechrum will become this in time. Sounds like there is an appetite for it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

    close to an airport if you are bringing in international bands. but close to a large populus for gaining a crowd big enough to cover venue rental and payments,

    Become what? Closer to Dublin?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭moshmonkey666

    letterkenny is grand for a day or 2! try living here! ****hole beyong belief!
    how did you hear about the whole casbah - dangerfields thing? i tried to keep that as quiet as possible lol, he agreed with me, and 2 days before the gig he didnt like the idea of a loud punk band playing cos, and i quote, "punk died after 2 years in the 70's", now i get on well with the owner, and its his pub, but making statements like that shows his knowledge of music! still, brilliant place!

    on the topic of punkfest, if this happens, i vote that Polidicks play :-), altho they are from Canada so might cost a bit lol

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

    I lived there for 12 years ;) I think word spread around random boards over the Casbah thing.... actually there was a thread on eirecore about it entitled "**** the casbah".Went for a bit of record shoppin in unviersal but it was fairly pricey and they didn't have much I was interested in. Didn't think there was much punk happening in Letterkenny at all tbh. Met some randomers at oxegen last year from Letterkenny who insisted on singing one or five minor threat songs with me :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

    i like universal records

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭moshmonkey666

    yeah universal is cool, always improving too!

    punks at oxegen? weird! all the ones i know from letterkenny that went to oxegen was the typical cock rock stuff!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

    hmmmm dunno. They were little guys. I'd say they were around 16 or 17.
    There was some band from Letterkenny supposed to play Leechrum but they never bothered comin down after rumours started spreadin that the whole thing had been shut down by the cops on the Saturday mornin.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭moshmonkey666

    there was my friends band, Multi-Story that were due to play at it, as far as i know they did play unless there is another band!

    WAIT A MINUTE!

    isnt this topic about a punkfest? come on! Irish/UK punk in Dublin! COME ON!!!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

    One of the Howards is in the band I'm thinkin of. That's the only reason I knew they were supposed to be playin.... if the name rings any bells....

    The only people with the cash to even consider doing something like this are toxic. Unless someone wanted to do a load of gigs to raise funds to get bigger bands over. That'd take a good while.

    Any ideas on how much something like this would cost? I reckon it would be at least €1,000 per band coming across from the U.K. and that would just be payin them and maybe some of the travel costs at a squeeze. Like it's all fine and dandy posting here that it would be great to get A, B and C over to play but nothing happens without the cash to pay for a venue, bands, travel, accomodation, drink and food. If you're lookin for "big" bands that's gonna hit a seriously big bill at the end of it all.

    So ehhhh yeah. Not sure what the point is. Toxic are the only ones that I reckon could run this. Of course MCD will get sum 41, Good Charlotte, Against Me, Anti-Flag Less than jake and whatever other major label bands if they think it'll be profitable but **** that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭moshmonkey666

    yeah, thats Multi-Story! they told me they did play! odd!

    yeah id say it would be Toxic, unless a bunch of punks got together and all invested money, for Irish bands there is the usual payment which isnt too much! but for a band from the UK, there is flights, accomadation and playing fee, plus you'd have to provide a backline and food/drink to meet their rider! altho if it was a uk band flights wouldnt be too expensive with the likes of ryanair or something.
