    Hi all,

Woz just wondering if anyone knows if the Oscars are being televised live this year anywhere apart from on Sky Movies?

    Cheers,

Well Lost isn't on RTE on monday because of the Oscars, but not sure if that's full coverage.

The ceremony is actually on Sunday night (our time) so what RTE's showing on Monday is the highlights. I think the Beeb is doing live coverage, but which channel, I don't know. Might be BBC 3, 4 or News 24. I'd say it's probably 1 or 2 though. Hosted by Wossie I would say.

AFAIK BBC aren't broadcasting the Oscars, Sky outbid them on the rights to show it live. That's why it's on Sky Movies... last I heard Sharon Osbourne was hosting their coverage.

As for Ireland not sure what the story is there. As someone mentioned there is a highlights show on RTÉ Two on Monday but no-one seems to be showing it live or in full so I don't know if that's just because no channel is inclined to or what.

And for the record I find this very annoying, I used to like flicking over to Jonathan Ross on the BBC but even if it's not on there I would have liked the option to see it live on an Irish channel. If it really is because no Irish channel is inclined to show it then for what reason?? It's on at 1am! What would any Irish channel be showing at that time on a Sunday night that would do enough ratings to justify not showing the Oscars instead!

I quite like Sharon Osbourne but she has no business hosting the oscars. Barry Norman gave a serious critic's view. Ross gave a less serious view, but one which at least respected the ceremony. I can't see Osbourne doing much beyond discussing what people are wearing.

It would be a little outrageous for RTE to spend that kind of money on a production that so few would bother to watch live. TV3 wouldn't bother because there's no potential for advertising on a five hour ceremony that screens over night.

the only suggestion I have is that in China its being shown on CCTV6 (AFAIK) - which you can watch with PPLIVE. Now I don't know if this will have chinese people talking over it, or what way it will be done, but its about the only way I can think of right now.

Tell me more. How does someone watch such a thing? What is this PPLIVE?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,958 ✭✭✭Chad ghostal

anyone think of any other ways to watch/listen to the oscars??
for example a web cast or something of the like..

it's a real pain not being able to see it live..

it's more of a pain to watch it live tbh. i'll stick to the highlights. though it rarely has any entertaining moments.

tis on @ 12.05.. I don't think i've ever seen it live, might stay up and see what the story is.. Doubt i'll be entertained much, not if naked gun converts to reality...

    P2P webstreaming app.
Google it - download and install the client etc.

Oh that is cool! I have it downloaded now but I'm still not getting how to choose a specific program. Do I have to wait til the show starts? What do I do then? Sorry for all the questions.

basically - run the pplive tv engine
right click on the taskbar icon - channels - find cctv6 and click
should start up after a short time - obviously they don't start till about 1am or so.

I didn't find a Channels option when I right-clicked the task bar icon but I was able to find cctv-6 in one of the drop-down menus. Cool cool. :)

I'm using IE (though I am using the new beta one with tabbed browsing). I've been soing what you said but the 1st link still isn't working. It says it couldn't connect to the server. However, as I type, the second link is shaping up.

    Irish win there, was it?

Best short film -- Six Shooter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

I think brokeback will get film despite - it just has that vibe going.

Would like Munich or Crash to get it.

I think Philip Seymour Hoffman might get actor.

    Not sure about actress.

On the documtentaries, I've only seen 3 of the 5 - but the Enron one was the best.

And there you go - an Irish winner.....

Yeah was expecting things to be similar to the Baftas but George getting Best Supporting already throws that out the window. I too expect Brokeback to win. A good film but it will probably be winning for the wrong reasons as usual with the Oscars.

No, the server is only on a 100Mb switch so I had to limit the number of connections. Just keep trying it...

excellent - didn't see that coming
    best picture - Crash.

happy brokeback didn't sweep the boards. Crash was a great movie.

Bit of a surprise allright. Anyone else notice the "go back to the cinema and keep us in the life we have become accustomed to" theme to the eveing :)
Must be worried about drop in bums on seats last year.

Not a bad awards show, glad Crash won as it's a good film and it gets boring when one film sweeps the boards. I know a few people who will be very annoyed that Joaquin Pheonix didn't win Best Actor, but hopefully they'll be passified by Reese Witherspoon's win.

Ben Stiller was great. Jon Stewart had some early jitters during his monolugue but he grew into the role during the show and even his monologue had some really good moments. "Trilogy!" I don't think it was the right atmosphere for him though, the Oscars crowd must be a difficult one to perform in front of.

"For those of you keeping count at home: the number of Oscars won by Martin Scorsese - zero. The number of Oscars won by 3-6 Mafia - one."

Crash definitely didn't deserve to win. It's not a bad film, but it's completely overrated, really not a "best picture" nominee in my opinion, let alone winner.

Also disappointed Jake didn't win, but c'est la vie.
