Installing Mandriva 2006 on a USB Hard Drive

    Hey Guys,

Just wondering if you can help me out. I want to give Linux a go and want to install it on my external hard drive. When I start installing Mandriva it asks what partition I want to install it on, it shows my other two hard drives but it doesn't seem to pick up the external drive.
My mobo supports booting from an external disk, so I'm covered on that front. I've tried leaving the drive unformatted, formatted in Fat 32, NTFS and nothing. It just doesn't seem to see it. I've tried googling this and searching boards, but all the threads I've looked at, are for Mandriva seeing the drive.

BTW- go easy on me, I don't know too much about Linux.

This would probably get a better response in the UNix thread under Operating Systems. By the sounds of it it doesn't allow installing on external drives. There are a couple of other flavours such as knoppix that might.
