    Because they're funny!

You're missing a vital point of evolution...

The strongest (or more suited to their environment) survive...

It doesnt mean that the weakest automatically die off... it just means that if we were in direct competition with monkeys for something we both depended on, we would win (probably :))

    Any other questions?

    Will they ever evolve further?
Like if you threw them into a room where they had to use tools et cetera 'to survive' and get by would they eventually become more intelligent or evolve any?

Some lads were slow on the uptake tbh, its a simple matter or lazyness. God knows how I'm a man, if my nature had've had its say I still would be swinging outa trees and pickin fleas off Charlie the Chimp*..

*I still do partake in these activities actually**

    **I'm not lying

As far as I'm aware, its caused by mutation over a large period of time.

Due to a mutation in our DNA our skull size was made larger, and so are brain (over arge number of generations) grew into it.

So we didn't replace the apes, we simply are a *mutant* version of the apes. We share the same ancestors as the apes tho...

It depends on how many monkeys you have to spare and how much time....

Otherwise you just get crap like "It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times"

i'd say yes, but it'd take millions of years so if they had to use tools right then and there or die, they'd never get the chance to evolve

The current monkeys/apes evolved in different direction to us from our nearest common ancestor. Evolution is not a line.

Man did not evolve from monkeys or apes.

apes, monkeys and men evloved from something else.(maybe Pierolapithecus catalaunicus)
That creature is long gone, changed over millions of years in to humans, apes and other primates.

Only the fittest servive, but what does fit mean?
It's not really about the strongest. It's just about being good enough...
Good enough to live long enough to breed.

But what does fit mean? for a deer or some such animal fit is being able to avoid being eaten by a lion, does that mean that the fittest deer is the fastest? yes and no... the slowest deer is the least fit. it gets eaten and does'nt get to breed. but the medium speed deers are just a fit as the fastest deer, they get to breed just fine... in fact they might be bigger and tougher than the really fast deer. these tougher 'arder deer are more likly to win the mating fights where deer smash there antlers together to win females.
So they do even better than the fast deer because they don't get eaten and get to have lots of sex.

As for the lions... they eat deer. and the fastest lion gets to eat the most deer. but they only need to be as fast as the slow deer. they just need to be good enough to eat ...

what has this to do with the monkey ape human problem...
    well... which is the fittest?
    Humans?
    Apes?
    Monkeys?

Humans are big smart apes, we make tools to make life easier, spears and slings and simple weapons make up for a lot... an adult ape can be many times stronger than a human of the same size.
we cover a large area of the planet and are the most successfull of all the apes.
so why are there still other apes?
well apart from the fact that our actions are killing them off at a good rate, there is no reason for them to die off. they eat well, and can find their own food in there own areas.
the same is true of monkeys, they aren't as smart as we are. they dont live as long, the don't work 40 hours a week...
but they have no problems finding food. the really stupid, slow, and unlucky ones get killed and eaten but the rest of the troop just go off and play in the forrest.

People seem to have this idea in their heads that there is a line of evolution.
With single celled goo at the start and smart human like creatures at the far end... followed by some sort of angle like creatures... and beings of pure energy.

Things change, they might get smarter, dummer, faster, slower, grow different teeth, or change colour. but there are some important things to remember all this depends on the preasures on an animal. and it takes many many generations. and the animals need to in a small enough group that these changes can be take hold.
The human race is pretty much done evolving(kind of, for the moment), not be cause we are the pinicle of creation, but beacause we are so wide spread and there are so many of us, we interbreed so no group get totaly isolated for the many generations that are needed for major changes.
There are very few things that would force us to change, as a whole.

if we "evolved" from apes how come we squint at the sun and no monkey/ape does...i know it seems stupid but if you think about it how can the need to cover your eyes when looking on a sunny day be considered envolution...afaik we are the only animal that needs to do this..it probably seems trivial now but i bet hunters/gathers were pisSed of before Ray Bans:D

I dont need to squint much... but I've got quite deep set eyes. the only times I need to squint are when the sun is low in the sky, in the mornings and evenings and in winter, mostly be cause the sun reflects off of windows.
Durning the summer when it's sunny I need to squint very little, my eyes are naturaly shaded by my forehead and eye brows

There is a very good book called the flesh of the gods by Terrance McKenna. It deals partly with the theory that it was drugs that caused the extremely quick evolution process. Many use mushrooms medicinally to improve eyesight which was said to be the reason for advancement in hunting. The drug was also suggested as the reason for religion and insight led to tool making.

We didn't evolve from monkeys and apes.

We evolved from a common ancestor. They went that way, we went our way.

You might as well ask why, if there's a certain race of people, why the other races still exist

where did the monkeys come from??
Well when a mommy monkey and a daddy monkey love each other very much....

Yeah, I think bluewolf is right, we did come from a common ancestor. We even had a few different sort of humans about a million years ago I think. Pre-homo sapiens. Homo habilis, homo erectus and a few others were around at the same time.

Damn I love Horrible History books. :D makes me sound so smart.

Wait a second, didnt GOD make everything, didnt he plant the dinosaur bones n stuff, they never really existed at all. Then he sent Jebus down to save us, or have I got this wrong AGAIN (I always fell asleep during religion class).

are you a monkey? only joking....yeah true for some people...but isn't that way eastern Asians developed slanted eyes* because for 1000's of years as the migrated east they were constantly looking into the sun?
    :D That's hilarious.

Everyone makes this mistake though (of course you were taken the p*ss). Evolution is completely random chance, nothing more, nothing less. All that happened was freaks were born due to random DNA mutations which happened to be better suited to their environment and outlived the species before them. Of course not all recently evolved species destroy the one that preceded it, but if they're in competition they will if they have advantageous characteristics.

Dilly1, who is this God of which you speak? :)

Because if we didnt have monkeys:
    • We wouldnt have the Monkees
    • We would be overrun with bananas
    • We wouldnt have an animal to compare Ian Brown/George Bush to
    • We wouldn't see half as much sex on the discovery channel
    • We wouldnt have monkey bars in playgrounds
    • There would be no Planet of the Apes

*disclaimer- i made that up it doesn't mean I'm racist! just taking the mickey
and not far from the truth.
evolution gave asian people an extra layer of skin over their eyes during the last ice age, thus leading to the "slant eye" look. the sun reflecting off the snow was the reason behind this. national geographic channel told me that.

Good question - this always confused me too!! and the wierd thing is we evolved from them but we keep them in cages. what if we let them all out o fthe zoos would they learn to function?

We did not evolve from any of the monkeys or apes you see. They evolved too, and all us from a common ancestor.

Over the last millions of years, apart from humans the numbers/species of apes has declined a lot, while those of monkeys has increased.

PS. Lemurs are nice too, but they are really endangered. If you ever go to Foto they are worth a visit.

Would be very interesting if we could use the genes of our close relatives. many monkeys especially in the new world can eat leaves poisonous to us and there are baboons? who live in Ethopia? that can eat grass. Chimps are nasty animals, but we could learn a lot from the similar but much nicer Bonobos.
