When is the "day off" for St patricks? Is it the following Monday (Mar 20) or on Friday which I suspect many will be taking off anyway.?

    Mike.

If the 17th is on a saturday or sunday then you get the next monday off, otherwise the day off is the 17th.

U know what pisses me off something terrible, reading over the Ash Wednesday thread how everyone hates Catholcism and relished the opportunity of eating meat. Now the prospect of St. Patrick's Day looms on the horizon, yet the essence of this holiday is to celebrate the man who brought Catholcism to Ireland, this country is so damn hypocritical.

Well there you go then, what has it got to do with being Irish. The celebration of St Patrick is a celebration of Catholcism then. Yet no one gives a crap about Catholcism , thats to say I dont, but Irish people use this day to make a fool of themselves and get drunk. It should be called "Leprachaun Day" because St. Patrick has nothing to do with the day in the modern Irish people's eyes.

To me, Patrick's Day has nothing to do with Catholicism. Personally, it's a day to celebrate being Irish and Irishness and being proud to be an Irish citizen.

There you go , rename it then FFS. Maybe the "Irish Alcoholic Day".

Exactly! Just like Easter is about a giant bunnyrabbit leaving chocolate eggs in your sockdrawer and Xmas is about celebrating the birth of Santa Claus. No point letting religion stick its oar into a good time.

For me, St. Patrick's Day will be spent in the pub and the bookies making a fortune betting on the cheltenham races. I won't be drinking too much, just a few pints. It's all about the racing!

Technically he brought Christianity, as opposed to specifically Catholicism to Ireland.

Not everyone treats Ash Wednesday as you say, although a lot of people don't take Catholicism as seriously, if at all seriously nowadays (me included) which is a demonstration as to how the country and its people have changed from days gone by.

Paddy's day is not a religious festival anymore, it's a day of celebration, although it's origin as being a day of celebration are (I believe) rooted in the USA, where the first St Patrick's Day parade took place.
