    Hey,

I've a small mini-itx machine, and a old laptop. I was wondering if anyone's use a USB wireless dongle for connecting to a local wireless network? I know USB networking stuff isn't always advised, but i've no other way to connect it, so wondering if it'd be usable?

    Thanks

How "local" is the wireless network ?

    What distance?
    What operating system(s)?

I've used USB dongles... they work fine...

It's a small home network, so maybe router downstairs, and machines upstairs.

Windows XP & 2000 will be the OSes.

    thanks

It _should_ do the job ..unless you live in a bigger house than I'm imagining... or you have thick solid concrete walls/mesh inside the wall?:) (Or other devices emitting strong RF in the same spectrum... ngih. don't worry.)

Windows XP & 2000 will be the OSes.
XP includes software built-in to control the wireless card
Win 2000 -> There should be software accompanying the USB dongle
    Both should be fine!

    Short answer: it's all goood...

    Is the router 802.11a/b/g?

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the eBook

I think I'm going to go for the SMC 802.11g router:
